Big what's its name...

I saw a big swimmer like this on the wall of a tackle shop the other day, so I thought I'd try making one. It's about 8 or 9 inches long. What's this style of swimmer called and what's its application? Surf? Rips? Rock?

surf vs trolling

Interesting. Were they set up differently for trolling than for the surf?

Thanks, Christian. These spray cans do a pretty good job.

Had another question about plug movement. I swam this guy tonight. I have a big #2 NJ Tackle pikie lip on it. Lots of roll and tail slapping of the water. I kind of liked it :-)

If I changed to a big danny lip, would some of the roll go away?
What about the tail slapping?

I'm beginning...

...to get it. Thanks for your help Capesams. Had one more questoin. This swimmer is unweighted. Should there be any weight in it. Under the nose for example. Would that help anchor the plug so it's less apt to roll over in a rip for example?

I'm just a plug building newbie, but I'd think you'd want a slug just behind the front hook to kill the roll...

if you made that plug out of lt. wood,,it should need some lead under the chin as well as belly lead,,,that's if your going to use it in rough water....other wise I'd just put some in the chin...blue streak[same style] as the one you made put a 1" long x 3/8 thick slug in the tail,,the lip was also bent downwards alittle more than normal so the plug would run deeper.

tailweight

Drill out the thru drill hole and put it there? Or below?
This is a huge help! Thanks! I think I'll end up doing about three more and setting each one up differently to really see the difference.

Blue Streak

Got a good look at a Blue Streak this morning. It has more taper in the back and the lip looks like a big danny lip, 1 1/4" wide. Took some measurements and pictures (I'll post them later today). Swam this guy in the daylight. Looks like a drunken sailor in the water :-) Will add belly weights to see if that will quiet it down, as well as turn some more bodies.

Also saw a big Goo-Goo Eye (at least thats what I was told it was.). It had a lip screwed to the face of the plug and the profile of that was much more like a pikie in that it flaired outside the profile of the plug body.

Do you make those big slugs? Or drill out big sinkers?

belly weights

Put two belly weight in last night, one ubder the nose, the other infront of the middle belly hooklast night. Swam this AM. Quieted down the roll. still has a nice wobble. Two more in the pipeline. DIfferent lips and slightly more tapered tail.
