New Accurate Spinning Reels
Here is some info on the new spinning reels coming out from Accurate.
I received the following input from Accurate today on the reels:
"Hello Joe, We did design the new spinning reel for surf guys like yourself.
It holds 300 yards of 30# mono and weighs about 30 ounces. It has o-rings
for water resistance. About the same size of the Stella 10,000.
Here are
some more soecs for you.
-- It is a 30/40 pound test reel and 65# spectra backing. 10 ball
bearings and 1 clutch bearing, O-rings, titanium spool shaft, titanium drags
(twindrag) and titanium bail that is manual. It gets about 28-30 pounds of
drag and is machined out of 6061-T aluminum. The gears are made of heat
treated stainless steel. Built like a horse. The reel just caught a 300#
Blue Marlin in Kona Hawaii. We don't have a set price yet but I suspect it
will be in the 700-800 dollar range.
We are also going to make 2 smaller
spinning reels once we get into production the the larger one.
Let me know if you have anymore questions."

Sweet
Looks to be a beauty.
30 oz is too much for me though so I`m hoping one of the smaller ones is around 22 oz with 250 yds 15 # capacity
Thanks for the post Joe!

I am going to second Christian's thoughts on this!
Not because of the quality, but because of the price!
I guess these companies think that fishermen are made of money or something????????
I am going to challenge any reel manufacturer to make a sealed reel for the surf that will sell for less than $200 and is reliable unlike the Nautil!!!!!!!
Shimano? Zebco? Penn? Okuma? FinNor? Daiwa?
Who's gonna step up to the plate????
I dont know about everyone else but I am sure that if a company would do this they would make quite a bit of money as well as obtain quite the following!!!!

I'm with Bud8 on this.Someone has to be able to make a water and sand proof reel that doesn't require me to hand over an entire paycheck.

At least they've slimmed it down a bit from when I first saw it.
Looks like more porting and less aluminum overall. Still heavy though, and as big as a VS300 when they stopped by with a pre-production version this year.
The Ironman really went off on them when they brought it by, and it looks like they listened, except for the price.
I think it's really built for the tuna crowd, but it may have potential for us surf guys too.

Or at least fit them with a roller bearing anti-reverse to get rid of the back-slap.
I don't know what appeals to me less, the 800 clams or the 30 oz

Makes that Fin Nor Ahab 16 look small eh Mike? I'd take an infinite anti reverse 706Z, that would be awesome.

Last I heard the drag was lifted directly out of their conventional reels.

Excuse my ignorance but who the hell would need to spend 700 to 800 bucks on a reel to catch Striped Bass? I luv the fish to death but lets not overate them no matter what conditions you fish in. Christ, at 700 that's 300 more than my mortgage payment!

1983, 1 and a 1/2 acres plus an unbuildable lot ( 1/4 acre) to boot right aside of it. At the time it was a two year old Cape that had only been lived in for three months. $ 46,000.00 for the whole shootin' match. Oh yeah did I mention that my backyard is 2 and a half miles of State conservation land too? Not bad for Good OL' Cape Cod livin'.

Aluminum is light - drilling all those holes isn't saving hardly any weight - its just to catch the eye of the buyer.
Anything is stronger when it is ONE piece so why drill holes in it to weaken it?!
I messed around a lot trying to save weight off a mt bike over a decade ago - all that drilling/machining did was weaken the parts so they broke faster......LOL.
$800 clams is a lot of $. So is $600 clams. No one cares about the guy who earns a fair wage and had other obilgations. In reality do we really NEED any reel that costs over $125? I'm guilty as any one when it comes to over abundance of gear....lol.

Frankly I for one am glad to see these higher end reels. There are LOTS AND LOTS of inexpensive spinning reels out there. Everyone makes them.
For 100 bucks you can get a pretty decent spinning reel that works for years if you take care of it. Surfcasting is really a pretty inexpensive sport/hobby..but like anything else, you can pump it up if you really get into it. If you want a specialized reel, or one that is better made with improved materials, bearings, special coatings and alike, you should expect to pay more.
While a hyundai will get you to where you need to be a BMW is more fun to drive. Same goes for the fishing gear. There is added pleasure to fish with quality gear....is it worth it? That is up to its owner. Same goes for tackle....why buy a quality $20-30 custom plug?...because they work better and it is more fun to fish with then the comm plastic types...
I wish penn would make an international spinning and baitrunnner series...I hate buying overseas stuff and I am tired of "hyundai-class" or "ford feista" spinning reels. But they won't, they are fixated on "price-point" reels and not "performance ". Hence I buy Jap. I've been told penn makes more money selling reel parts then reels (they make 8-12 bucks on a $120 reel) , hence it is in their interest to make stuff that falls apart after a season. I have NEVER gotton more then 1/2 season from my penn bait runner without something going wrong and I don't use it all that much and it goes in for service EVERY season. The paint is bubbling up on the casing, the casing is corroding, the baitrunner drag does not engage.... the list is long. And the annual service bill is 25%-40% of the cost of the reel. On the other hand I fish with my costly stella almost *every day* all season long. It sees no maintainace except for a hose off now and again, it I have *never* had a problem. Also, when I sent it in, they clean and "fix"it for free. They replace stuff they feel is worn but I have never gotton a bill and I get free service coupons if I take it in for service at a dealer nearby. I had a friend bring in his stella to the shop, he bought one of the first ones, he never did a thing to it for several years and clearly something was wrong internally. The shop dealer said... send it in to the factory for out of warrenty service.... and he got a BRAND NEW REEL (latest model) in return, no charge.....THAT is customer service.
The reel you see here is huge and is made for offshore game. Ever see what a big accurate offshore reel costs? A smaller version for surf and inshore boat in the $500-600 would sell. (just ask shimanno or vs)
If you ask me Fly reels are overpriced...you can spend a TON on a fly set-up and quite frankly I don't see the technology in the reel to justify it. Hell, You can spend 500 on a crappy fly reel!

It's good to see Shimano's Customer Service get the that a lot of other companies get, because they definitely deserve it.
We've sold a LOT of Shimano through the years, so of course some have gone back for repairs and/or maintenance.
It's very rare to see a repair charge, and if there is one it's usually around $15. Turn around time is usually 2 to 3 weeks including shipping from the East Coast to the West and back.
If you get a reel that falls under the "Platinum Service" plan you'll get even faster service, under 48 hour turn-around as well as free priority shipping labels.

I have had my Penn 704Z for 25 years & it has never needed to be repaired. I just purchased the Penn Live Liner 5600L for $140 & expect it to outlast me. 6 stainless ball bearings & no plastic.

Penn made in Pennsylvania USA.
I really like the feel of the Shimano Bait runner but I prefer to buy American when I can.
All (6 now) of my Penn reels (3 spin 3 conventional) have never been sent out to repair.
You say potatoe I say taters. To each his own - mine is a Penn.

I would be really leery of this reel until it has been used for a few years anyway. My friend fished some Accurate 130 class reels and had nothing but horror stories with the reels. In one instance in particular while reeling up a bait off Chatham he had a handle pop off in his hand. There were a few other instances of bad luck he mentioned. That was a $2500 reel, it did not pass the muster test for one season and were subsequently sold on ebay! He also had a pretty poor time with their customer service. Big money in this case certainly does not translate to better equiptment.
