Striper fever
I've got the burn bad today.. all day long all I thougt about was bass fishing. One thing in particular kept going through my head.. the feeling i call "the needlefish trance" that feeling where you and the needlefish are one.... your just slowly cranking away on your reel, twitching the rod tip every few seconds, and your mind is totally blank... Then all of a sudden a moose bass comes along and hammers your plug, only to leave you standing there and all you hear is ziiiiiiiiip of the line peeling off your reel, and you look down and the spool is turning so fast its a blur.. The fish runs for about 20 seconds(but feels like minutes) then you turn it. The fish banks to the right and tries to cut you off on a rockpile, but you flip the line off the roller to fakeout the fish. It changes direction and then you have him...you flip the line back on the roller and start winchng... By the time you get it to the beach your heart is pumping and your forearms are burning from winching the bass in quickly so you can release it safely. You pause a bit because the wash of the waves is going out and you know that you could loose the fish in water roaring down the sand.. Then it turns and does another epic run, only to be turned agian and beached this time. You run down between waves and thrust your hands into its gills and haul it up to the dry sand...then you collapse on top of it like its the summit of mount everist and you've just reached the top.
I've fondled some plugs, i held my reels and even cranked the handles a bit to work out the demons.. nothing quenched the fever.
i got it bad this winter
Who else is pacing back in forth thinking of bass and how do you quench the fever??-

Its even worse when you got new gear to "play" with and there's nowhere to play.
Only Springtime'll quench it.

You don't need to tell us about your plugs, but cranking the handle will keep that VS from siezing up

I dunno maybe IM just a junky but......
Eben,it's story's like that is what brings us to think about our own adventures on the beach's in total darkness. While standing in waist high water reeling ever so slowly..waiting...thinking,Im I in the right spot?Do I have the right presentation? Then theres a bump then a twitch,Then............Nothing.....Then....A slam..then slack...then hoping for that one in a life time fish. But nothing comes so were back doing the same thing gazing off to the seamless Black star gazed horizion reeling hoping and wiating for that slaming strike of a life time!
Then the Phone rings...& were back in reality. Our stupid chairs typing & thinking about stripers & the up comming year. Here we sit thinking and demanding to ourselfs how we can do better than the last year.So we march out to our garage's/basements/spare bed rooms rip our reel's out of thier winter slumber and pre maturly force them back on there reel seats & then gaze onto the pole, grab the reels handle & start to turn it ever so slowly feeling the smoothness thinking how effortlessly this reel/combo Will proform in the fight's ahead, and then we melt away & daze off once again thinking when, how big the bass will be in the season of 2005.
Nice thread Eben.
You Know now,IAM not gonna get squat for sleep!

You guys should!! get a winter hobby. I just got back from 8 inches of powder.
I have done some Ice fishing but it is no way comparable to the surf. I have been speculating as to buy a RI shore map and find your secret holdover spots.

I like the winter but there are days when I get the itch to fish. Go birding Eben, or you can head out with us and we'll drop you off on an island with a gun and, maybe with a little luck, you'll pull down a duck.

I am getting the itch right about now also but I have been busy working on the house I don't have time anyway. Hopefully I will be done soon and I will hit a holdover spot.

After spending too much time just staring at my fishing gear I went out and got a lathe just to keep busy..That will suck up some time this winter but it feels more like I am getting ready for spring. I can't stand to think it is still like 4 months away, ugh But it is better than just hiding in the cave doing nothing but

Bart, I have a pair of snowshoes and when we get the snow I usually head out into the woods behind my house and pack down my trails.
Mt. Wachusett is only 20 minutes away and offers some good hiking trails.
Clammer I know we have them in Mass but I had a hard time catching them there in season. and now that there a little sluggish.

stop the dreams
3 nights in a row, set the hook and miss. Or set the hook and fish is caught in a wirlpool and ends up in my tackle bag. I wake up feeling guilty for keeping a short fish.
Heading to 10,000 islands in S. Florida next Thursday. Snook suck, redfish aint bad, maybe a few linesiders took a wrong turn on 95 south.
I need big stripes on my fish.
Did I say snook suck, sorry they really SUCK!

That's a good sighting Eben. Last year we had an eagle hang around the pond for a week. Haven't seen one this year. If your're in the market for a good field guide I highly recommend the Sibley Guide to Birds.

Went out to the truck yesterday to get a tool an i saw this yellowtail hawk? put the breaks on midflight.sat a watched him for a minute.then grabbed the tool an closed the door i looked up to see him swoopin down on something was out of my sightline.Just then I hear this blood curdling screamm was pretty cool.I see em fly around alot but i rarely see em make a kill. Not much on bird watchin my friend knows all there names.Whats the name of the groucho marks lokkin bird hangs around the inlet mostly by the bridge pileings.kinda looks like a egret mixed with a seagull.Only see em at night.Nocturnal like me.

Black-crowned night heron, or the other kind of night heron. Same thing up here, sometimes, when jetty fishing at night, one will fly out right next to me, giving my heart a jump.

Fished this am in Providence. It sucks with all the junk in the river but at least I wet a line. Suppose to be mid 50s Thursday. I am off the road this week so I will fish somewhere. Meanwhile, just keep spinning AYC when I have the time. Work has been my salvation this winter. Just really busy.
