thats so cool! hey i think that its just natural for gay people.. and i just dont get what people have against it? its not like they are running around hurting people or anything. they keep to themselves just like any other couple does. big deal if animals or people are gay.

I heard on the radio that it is the same as an all male prison. They just got accustomed to each other all the time. How did they know where to have sex?

I'd buy into that if gays weren't the first disease vectors for AIDS. I'd buy that if they would STOP HAVING UNPROTECTED SEX WITH HUNDREDS OF PARTNERS.

Doctors discover new HIV strain
By Marc Santora and Lawrence K. Altman The New York Times
Saturday, February 12, 2005

Virus is resistant to nearly all drugs

A previously unknown strain of HIV that is highly resistant to virtually all known drugs and appears to lead to the rapid onset of AIDS was detected in a man last week, New York health officials said Friday.

While the extent of the spread of the disease is unknown, officials said the situation was alarming.

"We consider this a major potential problem," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The department issued an alert to all hospitals and doctors in the city to be on the lookout for the new strain.

The virus was found in a New York City man in his mid-40s who engaged in unprotected anal sex with [several hundred] other men on multiple occasions while he was using crystal methamphetamine.

While HIV strains that are resistant to some drug treatments have been on the rise in recent years throughout the United States, city officials said this case was unique and worrisome for several reasons.

First, they said, the strain of the disease was resistant to three of the four classes of drugs used to treat HIV from the moment the patient got sick. Typically, drug resistance comes after a patient is treated with retroviral drugs, often because they go off the prescribed course. And, more often than not, a person is only resistant to one or two classes of drugs.

But the resistance comes in combination with its rapid transformation into AIDS. Each of those things has been seen before, but never together.

In this case, the patient developed AIDS from 2 to 10 months after being infected. Usually, it takes 10 years for the average person infected with HIV to develop AIDS.

At a news conference at New York's health department, where Frieden was joined by nearly a dozen doctors and community leaders, several people recalled having that same worried feeling they had more than two decades ago, when AIDS first started appearing.

The city has been in close contact with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

More tests need to be completed before it is clear if any combination of drugs can work on this strain of the virus. But given what they know now, Frieden said treatment would be extremely difficult.

From the moment the health department learned about this case a week ago, they have been studying complex laboratory tests to figure out what exactly they had on their hands as well as trying to figure out the man's sexual history.

Health officials would not go into detail about how many people the man may have had sex with, but they have several investigators trying to track down partners. The man took an HIV test in May 2003 and was negative, health officials said. Investigators believe he contracted HIV in October of 2004, when he engaged in unprotected anal sex with multiple partners while using crystal methamphetamine. The man found some of his partners on the Internet, officials said.

Frieden said that the most likely scenario was that the man had sex with someone who had AIDS and had already developed a resistance to drugs. "Whoever gave it to him most likely did not have sex only with him," Frieden said.

Pretty pugnacious there Wee. Let's stereo-type an entire population segment based on the behavior of an ultra-minority.

I'm sure there's no heterosexual promiscuity out there...nope, none at all

And before you rant on about bath houses etc...just think about the impact societal intollerance has had on forming such anti-social bahavior.

Spence, I don't count myself amongst the gay-bashing population.

But two things are clearly established and I'm not going to sugar-coat facts:

1) Gays (namely, one deceased gay Canadian flight attendant) brought AIDS to the developed world in the 1980's.

2) Gays help spread the disease.

You'd think they would have gotten a clue now. We don't have a cure yet, a vaccine is a while off, and current treatments are just that - treatments that stave off development of full-blown AIDS. All the while the viruses are mutating.

It's not being gay - it's the irresponsible LIFESTYLE that many gays practice vis-a-vis drug use and unprotected sex with hundreds of partners. This has nothing to do with societal pressures - this is just some gays having reckless fun without a thought for the consequences. What they hell are they thinking? They are making things worse by passing on a more virulent form of the disease.

Didn't accuse you of gay bashing, just being pugnacious

In the end it's individual responsibility, but social intolerance certianly exacerbated the explosion of HIV among gay men in the 1980's. A lifestyle driven underground is ripe for promiscuity, and the medical community was none too quick to take to the cause of understanding the "gay plague".

The fact that a gay man brought the virus to the US is meaningless. It could have been a female or a monkey for that matter. It still would have likely spread in a similar manner.

Lots of factors have contributed to the spread of HIV.

The thing speaks for itself, loudly, Spence. It's not known exactly how the flight attendant got it, but the most hypothesized route was through unprotected sex with young boys abroad or with animals. Personally I'm going to hold gays accountable for bringing it here.

I recently spoke with management of the world's largest condom-manufacturer.

There's an awful statistic you'll hear.

Condoms are only worn 1 out of 4 times when they should be, and 1 out of 4 people under 25 have STD's (in the U.S.).

Most people won't admit it but gays skew these averages UP.

If you're going to hold "gays" accountable for one gay man bringing HIV to the US then you are certianly flirting with gay bashing to some degree.

I'm don't quite understand how they could say they don't know how the flight attendent got HIV, but it could have been via sex with a monkey. Is bestiality common among gay men? I'd wager it's not...sort of like the misconception that gay men are more likely to be sex offenders...

Spence, it wasn't (isn't) uncommon for gays to go overseas on sex junkets. Younger boys (who may have been infected...how I don't know) were often frequent targets. It doesn't help when you leaf through an older gay-friendly tour guide and find references to "getting young boys for the price of a cocktail" in exotic countries.

I read stuff like the article above (on resistant HIV strain) and it makes my blood boil. Gays, having brought the disease here, playing an important role in spreading it here, and then not putting a lid on the spread NOW after all that has been said and done is just unconscionable.

Again, I'm not understanding how you're singling out gay men here. Are you saying that the gay sex trade is considerably larger than the existing non-gay sex trade? There are plenty of disturbed "straight" men heading to Asia to enjoy underaged girls.

My .02 for what it's worth...

Whenever I complain about someone else (or myself), I’m complaining about God’s handiwork. I’m saying I know better than God. There’s good in everyone and there’s bad in everyone, but we’re all children of God and each have a right to be here.
What man can say, if he’s being truly honest with himself, he wouldn’t take the opportunity to be with as many attractive women?

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

I'm not messing with morality here. It's accountability for irresponsible acts.

The issue is unprotected sex. Straight or gay or bi...anything else in this day and age is irresponsible...unless you know for a fact that your partner is clean and/or monogamous and not an IV drug user.

AIDS didn't cross over from the original gay population until bisexuals and intravenous drug users were touched. Then it was on to unwitting hemophiliacs/transfusees and straight people who might have caught it from their dentist and other ways.

In all likelihood, AIDS would be classified as an exotic disease today if gays didn't bring it into the world.
