Line for 6500 Mag Elite

I ask this question every year. I have a 6500 with a levelwind. If I am not using spectron, I use Ande Green 16#. I want to try something else. Anyone experiment with something new in the last year or two, and how did the line fish with various methods from the beach, ie. plugs, jigs, swimmers, bottles, whatever?

I mthrew the same reel with some 17# suffix this past weekend in jersey and it seemed pretty good...

What could be better than 35 lb Cortland spectron?

65# Whiplash (if you have a stash or can find some) or 50# Power Pro also work. You'll get almost all of a 300 yard spool on a 6500 size reel.

For mono on those reels, I've used 15# Big Game. I'm not comfortable with 150-160 yards of line on a surf reel, so I stay away from 20# mono.

I generally use 50 power pro on mine - fairly happt with the PP... For mono I use 20# Big Game but linke mentioned above, you can get close to the end with that. On an extremely rare occasion with my 1205 and something balistically pleasing I have damn near dumped the whole spool with it....

I use 50# PP and 35# spectron on both of mine. I like the spectron better because it is more forgiving and more abrasion resistent. I agree with Saltheart.

I have always used 20# big game. I like the way mono feels with plugging a lot more than braid. I have tried using the 17# big game but it has a bit more stretch than the 20#. SO I take the chance of only having about 160 yards of line. I have not run into problems with the lack of line.....yet. I just fish a abu 7000 or spinning with power pro when I need a lot of line.
