New moon all-night skunk in South County

Planned Sat night a month ago to fish the new moon all night. Got to Scarborough around 11:00 Sat night and fished ----------- until dead low about 1 AM. Then fished most of the incoming at Pt Judith - covered every inch all the way to the end of the East Wall. Threw mostly eels, some Danny and needle plugs. Not even a tap all night.

At first light, we headed over to the avenues we threw some surface plugs for an hour. Not even a look-sie.

Fished the new moon, good tides, very hard from 11 PM until 7:30 AM. Not even a TAP!! Didn't see anyone else catch a thing, but I was surprised at how few fishermen I saw. Maybe you all knew something I didn't, because i was expecting a good night.

Enough to make me convert to the dark side (boat fishing) for good.

Hope you all fared better...

Uh oh...Eben Van Policeman is on duty

Skunko for me Sunday night as well. Too bad as the surf was really honkin, but several places were very weedy. Nearly unfishable with plugs.

Eben -

I considered being more generic in my spot names, but since I got skunked, I didn't think my message was going to result in huge crowds.

Piemma - you are the man. Based on my observations, the whole Narragansett shore was completely devoid of life. I went to a seafood market to buy fish on the way home, and I was half-expecting to be told that they didn't want my business.

Sure was beautiful out there though.

Maine was weird also.
Not a skunk by any means, but spotty in a place that usually on June moon tides is fish after fish. No Baitfish around either. However there were fish in all the summer spots already.
I think the combination of the cool weather and large rainfall amounts have made the conditions such that the baitfish do not yet need to come to the esturary mouths to feed and therefore the predators don't either. I think if you had access to satelite photos that showed the plumes of water coming off the major rivers they would look quite different than normal. All the stuff carried out by the rivers is what the filter feeders come to get when they show up in rivers or outside the mouth. This year they can still feed offshore, at least that's my guess.

last night i dropped an absolute slob in SoCo. this fish took line faster than anything i've ever hooked into before. last october i caught my personal best, a 30 pounder in current and this fish put the 30 to shame with no current. i'm guessing she was 40 +. saw her hit on the surface, do a little dance and then she ripped off about 75 yards of line in a matter of seconds and had me around a rock before i could do anything. i felt totally violated.

We fished Nantucket's and Vineyard Sound on Saturday too and we got a couple keepers, but real quiet too. Funny how it was dead all over...

Fellin' better about central Maine all the time.

Slayed them all weekend long on bucktails. Insane herring run going on right now i had a fish a cast for my first 18 casts last night. Granted my fish were averaging about 24 to 27 inches. Did pick up a few in the 36" range though.............HIT 100 ALREADY

theres very small windows of opportunity depending on all the variables like weather, wind, tide, and moon. just because you fish a spot hard for the whole incoming tide doesnt mean that there are no fish around. maybe they were around at some point of the drop, or maybe they moved through a small specific area at a certain point of a tide and you just happened to be fishing 25 yards to the left of the right spot. burning a spot is one thing, but those small windows of opportunity at a particular spot is the what its all about.

My and others feelings is that simply mentioning names of spots has a negative impact. no hard feelings, i just dont want 10 guys standing on my favorite rock.

This applied almost every night last week where I was fishing. Complete chaos one night for about an hour with 5 or so guys fishing and a 15 to 30# fish coming out of the water every 5 minutes. Bigger fish were lost as well. But it was dead before and after that short window.
