Question Breakaway clips and pencil poppers

Have any of you that use these clips ever lost a plug when hooking up with fish using a pencil popper?

I had it happen twice in a row to 2 plugs. First it was a large howdy type plug that I made myself and had been getting some good bass on. Then it was a Mac blue mackeral pencil and both times I would feel the fish hit, then nothing and I was shocked as I reeled in the snap only, the line didn't break, the clip was still there so the only thing I can think of is that the action of poppping the plug caused the clip to spin around and get in position to be pulled out when the fish hit. Maybe if I put a large splitring on all my pencils it will not happen ever again

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

Question

was it a fresh one? The last time you and I fished I had one that I noticed was losing its, tension, for lack of a better word... the plugs went on and came off too easy... so I changed it out, nice and tight again.. maybe?

I would bet the natural action of a pencil whips the line around to a position where the clip could be backwards on the hit an slippin the plug off the clip on impact.that sucks I use a big rosco cross lock.I like the breakaways but on some lures they are a pain in the but so I find myself not usin em so much.

Slip have you tried a micro swivel to connect the clip to your line or are you tying direct? Could be that the tortion the fish is putting on the plug and then the clip is actually unbuttoning it.. Just asking, it may help

Domination takes full concentration..

Talking

Bruce I only use the larger size ( 80lbs.) for serious fishing and only use the smaller ( sometimes reported at 30 lbs and then sometimes as 50lbs.) one for schoolie stuff. They are great but before I went to them I only used 100lb. Coastlocks so even eighty ponuds is a bit light and remember(hahahaha) the beach ain't the canal where your using that gorrilla gear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why even try.........

Funny ya mention this Bruce ,I open my clips just a tad with pliers so I can put em on certain plugs easier, and never had a problem ,but last week I caught a fish and when I brought it in the plug was dangling on the line,so I says to myself how in the heck do I still have this fish on?I pick up the leader and the clip was stuck on its lip...go figure

Karl, you may be on to something there. I do remember recently having one that was a little bit bent but I'll never know because that particular clip disappeared along with my tiger needle to a large bass when the line broke. It's a reminder to me to always check my line especially at night, but when you are busy catching it's hard to stop.

NIB, no problem for me on penils, but some poppers can be difficult with a cupped face.

TT, I tie the leader to the clip, never had a problem before. Why would I want a micro swivel added? it can slid up and off easier than the thru wire on a plug I would think.

Flap, I almost always use the large size. Only time I use the smaller one is when I am throwing light stuff like those small poppers in the harbor.

Milo, that is one in a million but then again the Indians used bones as hooks so I guess it can happen.

I think it was just bad luck and the striper gods needed more of my plugs

You know what they say , guys with fat fingers have....fat ponuds!!

Why the clips? Why not just coastlocks? Pinch the little loop with your needlenose. they will never come off. Not even with poppers or penils.
