Cocobolo. That is some rich looking wood. Love to have some furniture made out of that. Cost an arm and a leg I'll bet. P.

those open grains are tough to fill. i put a few coats of clear on them, sand w/ 220 in between, always seem to get tiny pin holes.

just let me warn you if you play with that coco...it's like iron..it doesn't give at all,,so one opps and you'll be eating your knife or the wood or pulling splinter's out of skin...chatter's like crazy when cutting it .....and keep the vac snoz up against the wood as close as you can[like an inch away] so theres no dust on the loose....great lookin wood fa shore,,,but feels like it's under great preasure and ready to blow at anytime.
thxs. again for the comp's..guy's..on the hunt for other wood's,just have to find abit lrg. pc's. without having to buy a whole log.

Great job CS - probably took longer to glue up than to turn. AWSOME !!! What did you use for glue and how much pressure to clamp em? Also did the glue have any effect on turning the plugs?

Cs a couple of questions if you don't mind. How was it doing the through wire drilling? Just wondering if the boring gave you any difficulty. The other question deals with sanding all that end grain, did you spend a lot of time with real fine grit?
But as has been stated goregous work. Always fun to do Something completely different.

the glue I've been using is called "weldwood" made by "dap",,it's a plastic resin glue,,,look's like fine lt. brown powered sugar,,all you do is add a few drop's of water till it turn;s into mudd///if you want it thinner, just add more water,,,what's great about the stuff is the fact that it's dark brown when cured and fills in any gaps or holes...sands to a power too, doesn;t turn to goo when it gets hot from sanding,,,,,been using it since 1969. they also make the same thing that's waterproof,,come's in two can's..one's the powder/one is cranberry colored liquid resin.////clamping time is as long as you want or as little as an hour, depending on how warm the room or air is.
through drilling is slow,,bird's eye/coco are very hard,,I only push the bit in maybe 3/8's of an inch then back off to clear the flute's and let cool. if you try to force it, the wood/bit get's too bloody hot..I've burned up one bit already....sanding the end grain is no different[turning is another] than your normal end to end grain...after roughly shaving to the shape you want, I then use 60 grit to finish the shape,,then 80 grit, then 220,then use the green scrubby pad's too polish.....it goes fast and doesnt take any longer to do than a normal plug/// well! maybe a minute longer.
most if not all exotic woods/cedars etc. have what look's like small little ball's with lot's of hook's attached to them...when inhailed they stick to your lung's like glue,,never to be gragged up again,,,but! I do beleive turning a pc. only now and again won't kill you...it's the people that use the stuff day in an day out may have a bigger problem with it.A good fan/vac/mask can't hurt if your going to make alot of pc's.///I keep a good clean filter in my lrg. shop vac and as stated before,,the hose is right on top of the wood and not 6-8" away.
