Danger-Moose Crossing Ahead!

Went up to the woods of NH for a few days with Fishchick as we do each Fall....saw our first Moose grazing by the side of the road! He was huge but still a baby from what I could tell...about 600 pounds maybe? Got a few nice pics...hope you like em!

Nice pics, Reminds me of the time we went up the Kangamangus highway and my kids said "think we will see a moose dad ?" surprizingly about 5 minutes later as we were driving, just around the bend from the Andriscogan (I'm a bad speller) we saw one, no antlers though... very cool.

This moose was very docile....calm and much to himself. There were two cars taking a few quick photos as we approached...they left and we sat for a few photos and the moose slowly headed into the trees....we left and came back by about 40 minutes later and could still see him in the trees.....pulled over and stopped the truck.....gave a couple of smooching sounds his way like I was calling a cat and he took one look at us and came back out like we were old friends.... ....more than likely he just wanted another drink from the pool of water at the roadside but it was funny! I really admire such beautiful animals and I was just in awe having never seen a moose in the wild before...I had always wanted to.....really something to watch!

Talked with a bunch of rangers from the white mountains asked them what they feared most in the woods. Hands down all of then said a Bull Moose in the rut. He isn't afraid of anything and is big enough to do a lot of damage when he wants to.

So be careful with the moose this time of year. ThomT

Well aware of the danger Thom...I stayed on the opposite side of the truck....I was afraid a larger parent moose may be nearby....so I was quite careful...had that been a full grown 2000 pound behemoth.....I would have gone on by and watched from up the road....I don't need that trying to mount me!

gotta love coming accross random wildlife! I came accross a huge buffalo while fly fishing in the Yellowstone backcountry in May. We fished on one side of the river and he stayed on his side just doing his thing and giving us a look once in awhile. Doesnt get any better...But you always have to be careful...they may look docile but they can snap on a mements notice. I wish my buddys laptop that had the pic of me fishing with the buffalo in front of me didnt get stolen. Man i would kill to have that pic back

Thumbs up

very nice pics!!
we were up in northern maine...arriving soon to our rented cabin
and came across three of -em....a huge male with humongus antlers
and two smaller females....we instantly stopped and they let us watch
them for 20 minutes.....as we stayed perfectly still...
then they blended into the bushes.... it's a rush for sure
and similarly we had always wanted to see some moose.

Thanks BF those are some really cool shots.Something you'll always remember. Never forget, i was coming home from California on Amtraks Zefpher in Jan and had just come thru the 7 canyons as the train turned into a bowl.

There was a herd of elk feeding over the snow as the sun was going down behind the mountains casting a purple hue in the bowl on the snow. No one could ever imagine or paint that scene. Indelible in my mind.

Moose x-sing

Bigfish,
Went sweetwater fishing with my brother-in-law way up in Colebrook, New Hampshire at the first Conneticut Lake and stayed at some fishing camp about ten miles from Canada. A short ways north from the camps access road to Canada there was a sign that said moose crossing. What the sign should have said was "occasional car comes this way", because thier were more moose than cars. Stopped to take pictures one day and the lithium battery went dead on my 35 mm Canon old timey film camera. Used the manual exposure and walked to the front of my f-250 and came within 5 to 8 feet of the moose and took shot. Silly me getting close, but they were all eating the fresh grass on the roads edge. Besides I think the moose was enamored with my f-250. Wouldn't do that again. Older, wiser. One day though coming bacik from twenty miles in the woods fishing for what turned out to be little five inch trout I counted 17 moose along the edge of the road in a one mile stretch eating the spring grass. As an aside I actually saw a guy catch and keep three five in trout. What a shame. Oh ya my one five inch catch and released trout won me the hot rod for the week.
