First Striper of 2006
Since I believe the Fall run is over,(pun intended) I'd like to get a few thoughts as to when the first Bass will show here in RI.
Now I know Clammer says they never leave and Nebe catches all Winter but I am not talking holdovers.
The earliest I ever caught migratory fish was in 97 when we had a real mild winter and we got fish at the West Wall on St. Pats Day.
Opinions???

I'd say 3 rd week in march is usually a good guess with some variation year to year.

No. I don't believe that to be true. The first fish have sea lice on them.

We get holdover fish in the Bass River about a month before the first sea-run Stripers arrive(with lice). In fact, a couple years ago I witnessed a 22 pound bass taken through the ice from Folins Pond in February which is the rivers' headwater.

I remember that year because I got 8 or 9 I believe on Sunday there which was the 18th - the earliest I have ever gotten them. Not sure on whether or not they were holdovers or not though. They are for me the first "ritual of spring" bass, even if they are dropping out of there holdeover spots becuase they are "running" and not in the holdover spots.

the bass
would have to be a keeper first of all
and be photograhed having sea lice
(shhhh for a plug i'll draw them on ]
but seriously with the way the ocean currents and temperatures are changing so drastically nothing can be considered abnormal for
earlier dates especially when fish like sheepshead from florida are traveling all the way north to new england....

How would you verify it is the 1st keeper of 2006 ?
I would suggest that they give you a call and take it from there to verify.
I'm confused, how many plugs 1 or 2 for 1st keeper ?

Leave those poor schoolies alone and wait for the big girls This is by far the earliest this debate has begun.... I'm predicting now... They will show up within 5 days of when they show up EVERY YEAR ... not early not late.... they show up the same time every year.

Digital cameras are not at everyones disposal.
I suggest that there be a single point of contact such as a cell phone number to call if you catch a keeper.
That person would then let you know if there were any previous keepers caught that day.
or
if you have a S-B member to witness at the time of phone call.
or
arrange a spot to meet to verify after it was verbally confirmed.
or
whatever the receipent of call chooses.
Then again Afterhours is hosting competition, what does he think
