Your out there in the peacefull darkness then you hear this cell phone ring, if you happen to over hear the conversation its something that could wait till you see that person or some petty chit. Do you guys remember(not to long ago) the pre-cell days, those where the good ole days. I can't think of one reason why you have to have that eccessable to you at all times when in the surf. Say your wife is expecting can you fish if phones wheren't invented? Ofcourse you can, I did it with three. I guess you could argue its a safty issue but what the hell is a cell gonna do when you fall in the drink? Fish in peace.

All good points, case in point - when last year you had your cell phone in your pocket and it kept dialing my home phone for 3 hours straight

I'm probably the most Anti-Cell phone IT guy around.

The way I look at it is, If I'm at work...I have a phone on my Desk, If I'm at Home....I have a phone in the house. If I'm in neither of those places chances are I'm doing something where i don't want to be bothered.

I carry one because work makes me. they went over the bill at the end of the year and i had a whopping 21 minutes of usage....for the entire year.

Its like carrying a little version of your wife in your pocket. When it makes noise you know you don't want to hear it, you know it isn't going to be anything good.....But if you don't listen you'll just pay even worse for it later.

My cell stays off until I need to call. I have a 200 minute plan and use maybe 50 a year.

I was much like BBJ when I first had mine, (old bag phone, motorola, wish I had it, never lost a signal with that old heavy beast).
However, as my kids got older/more mobile, my Mom when into a nursing home, (I had the health proxy, and POA), I started to need it 24/7. Now, Mom's gone, but the oldest is in college, youngest in HS, it is nice to leave it on, they don't abuse theirs too much, and they have gotten me into text a bit, which is cool, simple 3-4 words, message delivered. I put the Ki-Bosh big time on the, BS calls to me, from fambly anyway Made it real clear it was not a leash.
When fishing, it's on and in the truck, I check for messages when I move, or change plugs/plugbag, or water break.
Could I do without, yeah.. but like an older customer I have said to another older person, well, if you don't like the new technology, give up your remote control, give up your color set, give up your automatic transmission, and power steering, give up your computer...

I've been shifting to text a lot lately too. It's easy once you get used to T9 input.

I leave mine on silent too. I keep mine in my front wader pocket, which is pretty waterproof, I've been knocked over by some waves and the phone was fine in there. I like to carry the phone just for safety, sure it may not save my own life if I go in, but it could save someone else's. If I was in trouble, I hope someone on the beach has a cell phone...or has one VERY close by.

I leave the phone in the car while fishing. I didn't have one at all until last spring. My car broke down and even though I was in town, I couldn't find a working payphone anywhere within a 2 mile radius of where I was. I got my first cellphone the next day.

The only reason I got a phone is to be reachable in the event of some emergency and having the camera in it, in case I need that. I keep it with me, but I don't usually carry it on my person. I can't stand talking with a delay and I don't like, as someone else put it, the idea of it being a leash, but if something bad shouild happen I want to know about it immediately or if it's me out alone somewhere, know I might be able call for help. My immediate family and the schools are currently also the only ones who have my cell phone number.

phones are no problem, when not on call it stays in the glovebox, If Im in one of those moods where I dont want to deal with anyone it stays home.. I take offf..

being oncall SUCKS: 2 cels, 1 two way and a laptop... Still had 'em on the beach though

I always carry my cell.....they get addicting. However when I am fishing if I am driving on the beach it stays in the vehicle....if I am walking the shore I usually have it in my bag because if I am down the Cape for example, I worry if someone breaks into my vehicle or steals my vehicle, how the heck am I going to get ahold of anyone?

For the most part....no phone when I am fishing!!!

I am on my 5th phone sense last spring, I just can't keep them dry. #1 was 3 weeks old #2 was a week old and so on, I just told my son and daughter that I was turning the 4 phone we have because the stupid bill was $350.00 last month. I am trying to save for a new Van Staal and the money went to the cell bill.

Keep it in the truck. Only time i carry it is when i'm fishing out of the way places alone. One spot in particular where it would be fairly easy to break a leg.

I like having my cell phone with me to be able to call the DEP turn-in-poachers line. Even if they don't show up, I get some degree of satisfaction from calling it in.

because of the lousey service mainly: but now i feel free.
i could see my neighbor and he could see me but we couldnt communicate via cell phones
i've had a 1/2 dozen of them over the years.

I'll never forget the day i was out on a very peaceful lake....
and that was the reason i went there....to get away from phones
and people and just kick back in my boat and enjoy the scenery
the tranquility and the peacefulness of it all.

so i'm catching fish as usual, having fun....and along comes this guy in a 25,000 dollar bass boat.... and i think....well at least he's a fisherman and he's here for the same reasons....

after about 20 minutes i hear his cell phone ring and it's his wife and
because i have outstanding hearing, i could hear everything he said almost....and i watched him pace on his nice flat deck back and forth, bitch and moan ,fight ,and argue real nasty , just so friggan miserable talking to one Bitch of a wife he had.....forever ,until they trashed my day too.

Cell phones are like a security blanket to children for many people. The feel of them in the pocket gives a sense of security and being connected with the family. Many that have home issues - such as illness or a elderly person that depend on them for help have a damn good reason for carrying one. I feel for them when the phone rings with bad news and they have to pull out and take care of the issue, whatever it may be.

For those who just have to call someone to feel connected, I say get a life. Leave the phone on silent and answer the messages that are important when you are in private. I am with Larry, carry it with you when you are away but use it intelligently. Nothing pisses me off more than hearing a voice in the silence hollering to carry on a conversation in the middle of nowhere!

As far as having to have a phone for work purposes, it may be necessary for a self employed person to have one at all times. for someone on a payroll, I ask if they are going to pay you extra salary or hours to be on a leash for their satisfaction. If not, shut it off and worry about the problems when you go back to work. Guaranteed they will be there waiting! Been There Done That!!
