autopilot info

I'm looking for some feedback on autopilots. I'm looking for a simple unit without breaking the bank. It would have to be able to run a 29'12,800lb express w/diesels.
I like the new Raymarine S6000 S1G but I'm open to any comments from people who currently have autopilots.
Thanks, George

Autopilot

I have a great autopilot, I tell my wife come here and keep the compass on 160 degrees. Work for me!!A friend of mine had a 41ftViking,he used to keep it in Wickford. Once he got her out of the harbor, I can't remember him going to the wheelhouse until we reached Fort Adams, and he took her into Newport Harbor. He said he programed the computor to do all the piloting. Do know what it was, but with his $ he could afford it. He got the boat because it was on sale for about $250,000.Maybe you've seen it around, she was called "Top Shelf".

Did he also polish the chrome all day on Sundays and freak out if anyone ever wore shoes that left a mark?

Anyone who dosen't stay in the wheelhouse while the autopilot is on should be shot. Thats just ignorance.

Robertson is a freaking WORKHORSE.

My father's Cape Dory has a Robertson.
The 70 I sail on has a Robertson

Pretty much the offshore industry standard.

RI: amusingly enough, the 40 footer I'm bringing back in a month... has a Robertson.
We let it drive the boat all the way down last year, the year before the owner had a Raytheon which died 2 days out (10 days hand driving)
Only time we didn't let it drive was flying a spinnaker, it couldn't react fast enough, but otherwise even in 30 knots/20 foot seas under reduced sail it did fine.
