Quanny Pond Casting Clave Report

Had a great day down there! Not a lot of fish, but the learning and discovery curve was pretty steep! I brought along 4 fly rods. A 12' 7/8 weight. A 10 foot 7/8 weight a 9 foot 8 weight and a sweet 9'-6" 6 weight. Now this was the amazing thing. The eight weights cast better with a 10 or 11 weight line on them! The 6 loaded better with an 8 weight line. This was consistent across the board for the other guys that showed up. Their rods cast better with heavier lines than the label on the rod.

I also met a guy who brought 8 spey rods. I'm going to have to get me one of them and learn how to spey casy. With all the estuaries and beachfront rips up here, it is a great match.

I also learned how to drift little tiny 1/16 - 1/4 ounce jigs with 6 pound test line in current. How to control the drift and the depth of the drift, and how to extend the drift. Pretty amazing stuff. Went out this AM to the Lead Mills Bridge and tried it out. Got my first fish of the season, one keepah!

Agreed. The weather was beautiful!
Not what I half expected though. BETTER!
All-in-all, Interesting, Entertaining, and I learned a few things (like how to cast efficiently for one!). Left just at the change of the tide and made a quick stop at Charlestown. Tried what Ken showed me, and for the first time, almost got a cast into the backing (easily/gently)!!!!! (thanks Ken )
For me, that was a milestone in my flyfishing and made the whole day worth while.
Looking forward to doing it again.
