Braid vs. Mono

I know this was a recent thread on here, but after years and years of avoiding braid, I am going to take the plunge this year ... but was hoping to get the insight of you braid users, as there were some excellent pointers here the last time. I fish everywhere, deciding on what rods to use it on ... probably don't want to use it on my plug rod with a Penn 975, as I think the mono is not all that different for casting distance. But for my spinning gear, buying a Cabo spinning reel for one of my 7 footers that I use from my kayak, boats, in backwater rivers, etc., but also have a number of new sticks - 7.5, 8 and 10.5 for the surf, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

imho braid rules. i use it on almost all of my sticks, feel connected with my plugs or metals.

I use 30# and 50# Stealth on my plugging rods, love the stuff. Also gonna try Fireline this year just for the hell of it.

THIS PERTAINS TO BONEYARD FISHING.

1. Worst Braid -- power pro. It some much as grazes a rock... *SNAP*

2. Next worst... Spider wire stealth (see above).

3. Next worst... Stren Super Braid. Nominally better than above.

4. Currently trying Fireline. If this doesn't work out... It's back to Mono.

On Sand or from a boat. BRAID is excellent.

Have 30# braid on the Quatum Boca. It is working well. I have gotten a few knots as a result of fishing jerk baits with no weight, the knots are a result of my fishing method, not necessicarily a result of the line or reel........... Once I cut back to where the reel was no longer overfilled, it has been working as perfectly as it could based on the way I'm using the rig......I am sure mono would have knotted far worse under the same conditions........

I've been liking braid for a while now. When fishing towater, I prefer mono because it floats and I can work the lure on top much better...

Been using PowerPro since it came out. Tried going back to mono once...... Nothing like the sensation you get out of braid. Havnt got around to trying other braids yet so I cant really coment other than PowerPro. 30# on my 7', just went to 50# on the 8,9 and 10.5'. All spinning set ups. Occasional knots just like anything else but they almost always seem easy to repair. Seem to be mostly caused by the fisherman (me ) not paying attention. Hope it helps.

Braid does rule.
30# PP on light stuff and 50# on heavy gear.
No break off problems as long as you tie on a long leader.

Braid is great stuff.It's smaller diameter an low stretch helps transmit whats going on from the plug to the working end of ur rod much more so than mono.U can feel a fish fart with it.Plus u will add a good 10-20 percent to ur casting distance.The biggest difference u will encouter is the lack of stretch.Because there is basically no give in the line u will have to make some adjustments.A lighter drag will help to keep the hooks in a fishes head.U can always lightly palm the spool if needed.U should probably upgrade any light weight hooks an splitrings as they don't do well under the added strain.I happen to like fireline.Some will go as light as 14 lb test to cast plugs like bombers an small redfins off the beach I use twenty for that application an use 30 lb for larger plugs an rocky area's, as well as fishing the ditch.

I just started using power pro this year. I have 30# on my spinner.
My first impressions after only a few trips are this:
love the sensitivity of it, you really feel everything.
aside from a couple of small wind knots, the only real problem I have with it is that when I was running teasers (in front of the plug), the mono teaser leader would twist itself around the main braid line. Kind of annoying, even when I shortened the teaser leader up, it still twisted, but not as bad.
I have a reel with mono for the rocks, I've heard too many bad things about braid and rocks.
Some great advice that I have used is to lighten up on the drag and manually flip the bail after a cast and make sure the line is seated properly on the spool and roller before starting the retrieve.
oh yeah and I can cast a freakin' mile with the stuff.

I like Cortland Spectron on the conventionals . Only spinner i use now is very light and on that I use about 12 lb mono.,
