Get the videos, books, hook up with some good casters and /or take a few lessons, then...
For an entire season, leave the spinning rod home, only use the fly rod. Beginning fly rodders, when confronted with obstacles such as wind, extreme darkness, etc tend to default to their spinning rods. Taking only the fly rod will teach you to use it in all conditions effectively. You won't have an alternative. This will improve your skill tremendously, in a single year. Learn to cast low and sidearm in the wind, and turn backwards and release the line on the backcast. Learn to tell by feel of the resistance and diameter of the line how much line you have out. Feel and sound (slight whistle) will tell you when you have weed on your fly or the hackle is fouled around the hook.
Follow this advice, and I guarantee that you'll soon become a proficient fly fisherman.
