Knot Help

Does anyone know of any strong knots for terminal tackle that are simple to tie? I've been trying to follow the diagrams of some of the knots and have become frustrated. I have used the palomar knot in the past for freshwater. Is this knot strong enough for surfcasting tackle?

kippy the palomar knot is one of the best you can use as it is about 90% as strong as the line it is tied with. There is a site that has animated video of knot tying that might help.

I know the Palomar is good, but I never really liked tying it. For mono I use the improved clinch knot and for braid a uni knot. Both are easy to tie, even in the dark and knot strength is good. I've also got a knot page with pictures on my site www.ledgerunnerbaits.com

Thanks everyone for the help. I think I'll stick with the palomar knot as it is the easiest for me to tie. GS, I like your website. Those plastic lures look like they would definitely get you into fish. I think I have some slug-os I could rig with a jighead. Thanks

Kippy, the palomar is my favorite knot as well, however, if you fish a shock leader or a fluoro or mono leader when using braid, the palomar uses too much darn line to tie.

In other words, if you retie a couple times, or change lures, you're leader is too short in no time.

I generally tie palomars a couple times, then go back to the improved clinch as my leader shortens.

My advice is to learn a few basic knots at home... a few times thru and they become easy. Also, check in tackle shops... my wife picked me up a little plastic, fold-up thing that shows a bunch of knots for a stocking stuffer at christmas. I kinda laughed, but I use it when I'm tying a knot I don't use all the time. Its small, waterproof, and can fit in any bag or pocket.
