Working the White Water

How many of you out there actively look for conditions where you can work the suds?

What do you consider optimal conditions?

How do you stay safe?

there are a handful of places I fish that at the right wind and tides, the white water makes up perfectly adn the fishing is great. These spots are not dangerous if you are familar with them, but I usually take a bunch of waves down the waders, over my head and get soaked. its worth it

white water and bass go together. Optimal conditions? It's hard to explain, each location is different , but when I see everything right I know the fish will be there. Staying safe. Waders , felt soles, a good water proof top with twobelts and a little common sense.

Give me the leading edge of a big Nor'easter, BIG water, not too much wind. I'm getting wood just thinking about it. I tend to be conservative in big water. One of the reasons I feel LONG casts are highly under rated.

Do you find more action on the edge of the white water, or do you get most of your hits right in the middle of all of the turbulence?

Give me a Huge Bright moon, Flat calm seas, No wind, 70 degree water temps....and a live eel , toss in a few rocks...and water clear enough to drink...

Hey Steve , do we sometimes work the pocket in the alley? or is the "Boneyard" the prefrence,, Hey "its good but very boney here"... What is a "pick" What is a "brace".....Caught some "colts" in that sluicway, any "Bull bass" around? which way is east? how come that ledge sticks out like that? who lives there?

where is the "Halocline"? "you bet your life they do" "you heard me" My line broke with the report of a 22caliber.....How can we move around the rocks with cat like swiftness?? Do you still fish a coffee Grinder?

A "50" looks as big as a small man....... "That fish has some shoulders on it"

The water washed white around the second point falling away into the hole on the downtide pocket, then as the tide rushed back up and clashed with the reef, the lineside could be seen in the backeddy slurping down copepods, I cast my offering again and again and let is slide this way and that wondering why this so and so offereing was not engulfed by the mamouth cow, I reached into my shoulder bag and pulled out a plug I fet certain she would take, after clipping it on my line , I sent it seaward to do my bidding on this starry night, letting the plug drum in the current, I felt the take of the moby hefty bass as she engulfed plug, Ater she felt the sting of the trebbles, she pouted and headed for the bottom, rubbing her massive jaw along the craggy bottom trying to free herself of the bothersome piece of plastic, tourqing the plug this way and that, I held my ground, line peeling off in a paste now in a last desparate attemt at freedom , I knew she was now mine, the massive figure now came in like lump, My prize was now at my feet, I placed my pipe in my mouth and took a long slow drag, the game was now over"

On a serious note, I like the edges of the whitewater but, like Steve said, it really depends on the spot for me, some places dont fish well in a heavy sea, some do, some fish better with calm conditions some heat up in a whitewashed state...lots of variables. "Clammer" took me to a spot that is only good when its rough and sure enough the fish were there, Went back on calm conditions and did not get a hit. There is a point for me when there is "to much" of a good thing also. The bottom line is learn your spots !

Yup, there is a comfort zone for me with fishing, I have always said that huge seas and loads of white water are sometimes overrated, The truth is and Steve can tell you guys this, we have done fantastic on some of the calmest nights.... Every condition has its place and time I guess, but for me now, I just dont need to get my arse kiked to catch fish anymore, however a nice bass taking in the whitewash is a one of the finest sites there is!

Mike- thinking about it somemore-- I have to say that my favorite conditions usually follow a hard southwest wind during the day subsiding at night. Throw in the new moon and fish are almost a sure thing, no matter what month of the season.

One would do well to flip in his offereing on the conditions you mention

I often see bass working the edge of the white water and seldom find them right in the thick of it. More times than not they are UNDER the suds or off to the side.

They are no doubt attracted to the wash, but they tend to wait for something to get tossed their way as opposed to going into the slop to feed.

That last image looked a lot more dramatic than it really was. However, you have to be on your guard, as you boys know, several small waves and then a big surprise.

As long as you're not in a boat and up tight to the rocks, I think fog keeps the bass close to shore even after the sun has lifted.
