Today I woke up at 7am, i had missed the buss and school starts at 7:20. And if I was to go into school late, i would get a DT for 3 hours that day. And with me not being able to get a ride home after that 3 hour DT, i'd end up getting a 1 day suspension out of school and still have to stay after for the 3 hour..
This is why I didn't end up going to school. Is it me or is this a really stupid rule? They say its to improve absences. I don't see how it would help.

Sorry Katie, don't want to seem like a jack-ass but the complaining about the punishment being un-fair would be a moot point if you just get to school on time.
Trust me.....an employer isn't going to buy the "I missed the Bus" excuse when you get older and start working.
Just think....my kids have to deal with this kind of rationalization 365 day a year.
"If you're arguing with an idiot, make sure he isn't doing the same thing."
If he has to stay after school then me or my wife have to pick him up.
I don't run to a lawyer because my kid screwed up and its inconveniencing me. I tell my kid TO GET TO SCHOOL ON TIME so it doesn't happen again. Its HIS/HER responsibility to be to school on time. Not Mine, Not My Wife's, and Not the School's
Curious is 3 hours of detention the standard punishment for your 1st Tardy?

At least you still get to go to school. Oversleep on your fishing partner and you dont fish. Boat leaves at 7:20 with or without you...........oversleep for work you dont get paid........lessons learned.....
Besides, you could always walk....good practice for those long hikes down the beach to the surf....
There are families that may not have a car or can not afford means of transportation such as a taxi.
Tell the principal that you have no way of getting home except to walk and god forbid if anything happens your going to see a lawyer.
I agree that the rule doesn't make a ton of sense but not going to school today was not the right decision. Picking up habits like ditching out on responsibilities only sets you up to let people/employers down in the long run.
If you screw up, face the music. Its simple. I think the mose important trait a person can have is credibility. Understand the rules of the game and play by them.
i normally wake up at 5:30 every morning.. I wasn't complaining or anything, i was just wondering what everyone thought about it. Heck i love school. and i haven't been late once yet. but if i can't make a 3 hour, and i deal with a day out of school plus the 3 hour that i still can't make cause i can't get a ride home, then it'll keep going on with suspensions and such. and i'm not really into that.
So yeah.. i wasn't complaing or anything, was just asking an opinion.

School rules are something I don't think you have a leg to stand on when it comes to questioning, especially after you've broken one. I'm not sure threatening the principal with going to a lawyer is going to benefit her unless she is prepared to go through with it, either. Teenagers these days manage to walk, bike, or use public transportation get to malls, movie theaters, and other towns all on their own, so why is finding a way home from school any different? It's unfortunate the punishment seems a little harsh as compared to the infraction, but I'd be surprised if Katie wasn't aware what the repurcussions of being late were. The rule probably wasn't put into effect to punish people who are seldom late, rather that someone probably noticed a lot of kids were taking advantage of being late and the result was a school rule that seems unfair. As a former teacher few things are more disruptive than a kid coming into class late. I'd blame the people who might have been responsible for stricter late rules being put in place, not the people who are charged with carrying them out. Your best bet might be to ask to speak with the principal (actually, the assistant principal, since he/she is usually the one tasked with discipline) and tell them your plight, that you were late and guilty as charged, but have transportation issues and can you work something out as far as serving your time. Like TDF my high schooler misses the bus occasionally and is involved in several school activities that don't come with a bus ride home afterwards, and then it falls on the parents or the kids themselves to arrange transportation. Katie, set two alarms and don't let it happen again.

we don't have any public transportation here, unless you call a cab from the next city over, which it'll cost over 20 dollars.
and theres no need to get a lawyer involved.. its not a crime or anything like that.
