He deserves better, he's paying the price for his disdain of the media...

He deserves in! What his dislike for the media has to do with his performance on the field I have no idea! I watched his entire career also.....he was the most dominant, consistent hitter of his time! Power and average! Feared by any pitcher who had to stare at him from 60 feet 6 inches away!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Sorry---maybe it's my foggy memory, but I seem to recall that Jim Ed Rice hit a lot of solo dingers when the Sox were up 8-2, but was almost a lock for a 6-4-3 DP with one out and runners on first and second, and the Sox down a run, in the late innings.

Big Papi, he wasn't

It doesn't help that he was a #^&#^&#^&#^& to the press and the fans--what goes around, comes around

I just looked at his strikeout vs at-bats....looks better than most power hitters.....and he wasn't driving in all those runs on just homers! Someone had to have been on base when he got his hits?

They don't vote on the last year of a players career Mike....if they did none of them would get in because not many players last season stats are their best seasons?

I don't know if they kept stats for walk o f f homers when Rice played, but I'd be willing to bet that Papi had more in each of the last two seasons than Rice had his whole career.

It wasn't strike-outs that was his Achilles heel--it was the %^&*()$ 6-4-3 DP.

He was a guy who consistently came up small in the clutch, for all of his stats.

Should it keep him out of Cooperstown??--probably not.

I think he's a border line hall of famer!
Hit into a LOT of double plays and a lot of his homeruns where with a lead in a game! not many game winners!
Had he carried the team even world series win like Ortiz did, he would have been in for a while now!

He was a very surly individual, especially with the baseball writers.
He could hit the ball a mile. Was he a clutch player I think not.
He hung a round a few seasons to long that hurt his numbers.

Yes, according to baseballreference.com, Rice was First in GDP from 82-85 and in the top ten 7 other years. Also, although it is a small smaple size, his postseasons numbers aren't that great.

The guy deserves to be in. He's only got 2 more years left for HOF ballot eligibility so who knows. Only player in the history of the league to average 35 or more homers and 200 hits in a 3 year span.......STEROID FREE! The press should have no say or vote for who gets in the hall. Too many grudge holding old farts with votes keeping him out. It's a crock. He'd be voted in by the players and coaches.

Players and coaches don't get a vote, unless they're on the Veterans' Committee. And the Committee isn't all that big. I believe they're a handful of existing Hall of Famers.

Initial HOF vote is done by the members of the Baseball Writers of America--ie, the press. Each major league city has a number of writers who have a vote. Boston writers couldn't possibly keep Rice out all on their own

The Veterans' Committee can only consider players after their eligbility for election by the writers is over.

He'll get in for sure next year. There's no one else that good coming up next year for votes.

I like Jim Rice, and also think he should get in.
He got the wrong end of the stick as I recall. Back then Boston was very white! He said some things he should not have ,but it was not easy
in Boston, Remember the little busing issue? Tuff time!
He also got screwed and never had his fairwell ,because of him? the Sox? the media? Very tuff times
