Price range? Braid/mono? Weight of most of the plugs you are going to fish? What type of structure do you fish?

If you're looking to purchase a quality custom built rod, MikeCC of Cape Cod Tackle is the man to see (There's a link on this site but you're better off going down to talk to Mike. He is a great guy who will definately point you in the right direction). He normally has a good selection of finishedcustom rods.
If you're looking to have one built, there's a builder on this site who does excellent work that I highly recommend. You can choose your colors/design and he can definately guide you in the hard-ware selection /grip/reel seat/eyes/lubrication/chastity belt/etc...
PM me for more information cuz -
As far as which blanks to choose, I can't help ya there. It's always a matter of feel for me...I don't put as much science into rod selection as others do, I let my builder do my homework for me , I just like to fish...I don't worry myself much with the all the details....I used an ugly stick for years and always caught fish and never had any issues with it. You will definately notice the difference with a custom rod, however, if it's doesn't fit the budget....then fudge-it.

If your hooked on ulgy sticks then theres no need to change your brand but it would be stupid to think they aren't better rods for the job. I had a 12' 2pc epoxied ugly convence that I cutt to 10' 10", 4'' off the tip the rest off the butt and lemme tell you it was an awsome rod for chunkin anywhere, even the canal. My first 2 customs where ugly sticks. When crazy Al had a semiar at MSBA he had some of his set ups on hand and so happened his big bass arsinal consisted of custom uglys.

That is particaly true it depends on who it is and what they use. If the average s-b'er starts a post on big bass chunk rods then you may get a couple hundred clicks but if a guy like 'Crazy Al' starts the same post writes the same thread then not only will them clicks double dudes will start searching e-bay and yard saleing for ugly sticks if need be. I know custom ugly sticks make some dam good eel rods but the brand is not backed up by a big name. Also, I think because its glass guys think it doesn't have the gutts that some of the other heavy rods, which is not true.

I got some sceptical PM's when I said here that my choice of go- to Cape/ sand- beach Eel rod is a 10' Ugly Stick irrespective of the fact I own more expensive sticks... But it must be understood that I used 17 lb. mono. for that application 99% of the time... never braid
For chunkin'... the 11 ft. Ugly with a large Thunnus/ 25 lb. Big- Game is my choice: leave the Baitrunner behind if you prefer Spinning to chunk the open beach with 5- 8 & bait... (as I do-- rarely chunk though)...

With my Shimano 6500 I use a Penn SpinFisher Big Game SurfRod
11ft 2 pc Line Rated 15 to 30 lb, Lure 2 to 8 oz . The rod was very reasonable about 100 bucks and it matches the 6500 nicely.
Hope This Helps.

I would suggest going & holding the blanks that are within your budget. You will get a much better idea of what you want when you go and hold the blank. & whoever you decide to have make it will send you in the right direction if your not really sure. Personally I wouldnt go any bigger than 10 feet, Especially with your pluggin set up. I feel the benefits of a long rod start to level out at 10 feet. Anything longer is too tiring making 100's of casts.
CMS Enterprises in New Bedford makes some great rods. Lots of finished rods to take a look at in the shop as well.
Good Luck, I dont understand the lack of replies on this thread. Hopefully this helps though

Why does the crazy one prefer a conv over a baitrunner for his 12' Trophy Hunter? I like the baitrunner for Bways and chunkin, sort of two purposes with one reel. Still don't get the advantage of conventional, if there is one, unless they just have more torque????
Maybe it's just me as I never have liked baitcasters either, the whole thumb thang is ludicrous, imho. Just seems like a conv set-up is one more thing to think/worry bout during the fight!
What say you, gents?

no respect? I agree! My very first rod of my own was ....Yes a 10' ugly stick. And yes I still use it from time to time. I have found I cast better with a stiffer rod so I dont tend to reach for the Ugly as often any more. Sorry guys but plain and simple its fishing. Certainly there are superior products out there as well as junk. I love fishing as much as anyone but I will be damned if I think a Ugly stick makes for a "newbie" or a Van staal makes a pro. I wish I could count how many threads there are on this site bitching about VS service or what have you.......Not to mention I know I cant afford one......not every one can. So does that make them as second rate fisherman?
Sorry I have much more I could say but I will stop because I am getting too fired up!

Try some of the threads in this quick search..
Seems a new rod thread pops up every week it gets old after a while.
There's tons of info stored up in these threads.Weeks of valuable reading people should take more advantage of it.
I guess most just don't know...

Rockbottom37,
You may want to concentrate on a chunk rod first, if you enjoy chunking mostly......it can also serve as a jig-stick, they toss the same kinds of weight.
Use your uglystick for pluggin until you've selected a good feeling custom plug-rod. I suggest you fish with some people from this site, perhaps attend one of the legs (research the legs to get more information..[equal to a fling]), sorry for using that word on here John.
Perhaps the people you meet or fish with will allow you to cast their set up a couple of times and you can see what feels good to you. Real life scenario is always better than waving an empty blank around a crowded shop.
They even have casting clinics from time to time...that's a great time to feel what you need. I think they even happen at the Canal.

i've never heard of fisherman being vain? i'm not hooked on any specific rod, nor am i stupid to think that's the only rod out there, hence the thread. i was always told by my "PORTUGESE" father that a good fisherman can catch fish with a stick and string if they know what they're doing,,,,, this is the same man that would bring a trash bag and fill it up with OTHER peoples trash that was left behind and would take it with him,,,, and i would always wonder why? well it's the same reason i do it now,,,,every trip i fill a white trash bag up with trash, cans, bait boxes, plastics bags, socks, ya name it,,, it's a shame what people leave behind...but back to the program... i do alot of shore and boat fishing....should i discount the 39lber i caught last year on an ugly-stick and a penn 7500ss? i caught over 10 fish last year over 30lbs. all on an ugly stick, not to mention dozens and dozens of keepers, dozens of black sea bass, hundreds of mackeral and squid, even snagged about 20 pogies in monomoy to live line in them rips ,,, on,,,, yup ugly sticks.... it's sad to think that when ya post a fishing related thread on a fishing related site, ya gotta be "joe da pro" with a vs250 on a lamiglas before ya get anyone to chime in....
if there are plenty of threads already started about this subject or one close to it, then a simple statemant like that would be helpful in itself.. after all i am new to the site ..... thanks nib,,,,,,, the fisherman that i'm friends with and close to or just some ya meet out in the canal,,,,,not all, but some tend to be a real small community who got out of their way to help.... i know i would do anything possible to help anyone out in any situation, it was how i was raised, i'm sure alot of you are the same way. ya don't wanna reply or help out because i own a ugly stick,,,,,no biggie,,,, if ya ever stuck on the highway i'd still stop and help ya out,,,,,, is it really this way? i'm not stupid by any strecth might just be a bit niave to think stuff like this happens....
a man knocks on your door and hasn't had anything to drink in days...... do ya judge the cup he has with him,,,,before you pour him a glass of water....... life is hard enough, people helping people is still the easiest thing to do.... thanks for all who helped out

RB37,
I understand where you're coming from with your question -
Perhaps there's someone out there(here) that has a baitrunner attached to a decent blank and can chime in, along with their fishing preferences/styles as well as with the Penns.
But in backing up the Great NIB, the Search Feature is a great tool.

I'm going to triple down on the search tool. I love following the ongoing discussions, but when I have a real burning question, SEARCH and then presto its done. I tell you, this site has about 100 fishing books in it, with some of the strangest yet most relevant chapters. I dunno why I keep buying fishing books...its all here...all the time...

I happen to prefer lamiglass rods.Of all the comapnies making rods for the surf they IMO are the only ones who get it.'
If I had to chose in 9 ft spinning the xs 901ms or in 10' the xs 101 ms.These are built on the GSB "graphite surf blanks" in the coresponding lengths 108 an 120 ..inches.In the Medium 'M' power range..
U can google lamiglas to see what they offer.
The actuall suggested weight ratings are a litlle off though.I would say in the ten footer the optimum weight rating would be 2.25 oz an in the 9 fter 1.25. so if u have lures in them ranges which most surf lure fall into u should be alright with one of them 2.I prefer the longer rods some like em shorter..
