Mitchell 302 and Braid

I picked up a 302 to be a backup to my 706z. I took the 302 apart last night. Wow! that's a lot of washers. Don't want to do that in the field!

Does anyone know how well this reel will work with braid?
I use 30# fireline with the penn, and I have some suffix that I want to try this year. I have tried power pro and I don't care much for it. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I wouldn't even think of using it with braid. The line rollers are notoriously bad and it doesn't spool line evenly enough.

Except for the line roller issue, I think Fireline might work. Maybe you have the one 302 in a hundred that has a free-turning line roller

I have been trying to find a manual pick-up for a really nice 306 my neighbor gave me to use - used to be her late husband's reel and she gave it to me when she kept seeing me heading out to fish.

The line roller is not ideal on the reel - so I figured that a manual pickup would replace the needle-like roller with a decent roller assembly and allow me to use fireline on it. Problem is - they are harder to find than an honest politician.

If I run into one - maybe I'll run into a couple and will PM you. That might allow you to use that braid after all.

labrax, I myself am looking for a MPU for a 306. They are very hard to find and new will probably cost $20-30. The roller and the nut that holds the roller are the parts that are very scarce and are interchangable with any mitchell MPU kit made while the mounting arm for the 306 kit is readily available from various online dealers. So if you find a 302/402 or 486 MPU kit you could scavenge the roller off of it and purchase the mounting arm for the 306 separately. I have one lead on a guy that deals in new old stock Mitchell parts but getting him to call me back has been difficult. If I find some I will be sure to PM you.
