Maine

Things have been awfully slow the past few weeks. It looks like this weekend will be the end in Miane. I'll have eight months to think about next fishing season. In some respects I'm actually looking forward to the time off (I believe the shrinks call this rationalization). I'll try to get back into the good graces of the wife who I've barely seen since June. I'll try to eat a bit healthier. Breakfast at 4:00 AM and hot dogs for lunch at 10:00 have probably raised my cholesterol 100 points. Sleeping on weekends until daybreak will be nice. Hell, I may even stay awake during meetings at work. Surely I'll smell a little better without mackerel hands and wader sweat. The few times I do go up to Maine I'll be able to walk the beach without constantly looking for breaking fish and birds working. My schedule will not revolve around the Weather Channel and tide charts. I won't have to go into the baitshop once a week and buy stuff I'll never use. Last but not least I won't dread the end of September because it will have passed, but instead look forward to Memorial Day when I can start fishing again. This has been the worst four months of fsihing I've ever had, but I still loved every minute of it.

Marty, look on the bright side. You don't need to worry that every stretch of saltwater you see up there might hold a 50 pounder. It starts to eat at you after a while. You know, driving home from the train station, passing by a large saltwater bay and thinking that "I don't need to go home and eat, there might be a fifty in there for me RIGHT NOW!!!" Your time for self-tormentation is nearing it's end for this year, some of us now are about to go into that mode!!!

Don't give up hope. Before you get completely into the good graces of your wife, tell her your going away for weekend, find a little motel, and come down to Rhode Island for the Striped-Bass.com Fall Classic. Sounds like a bunch of us are going to give it one last hurrah together.

I believe that Oct. 13/14 is the most popular date so far, but we are waiting for word on the RI branch of the Tri-State tourney, which is around that time. John would be fishing that, plus it would be tough competition for spots with all those seasoned tournament anglers.

Hey, that's cool about your wife. My wife is wonderful about my fishing too. She really enjoys it herself when I can get her out. Tough for us both to get out with a 3 year old runnin' the household!

Thanks Schoolie Monster. I've seen the thread on RI, but never bothered to read the details. I'll keep an eye out. We're closing the Maine house on Columbus Day, and have a wedding two weekends later so the weekend of October 13 could work. In terms of wives, I do admit that I hit it lucky the second time around. Part of the reason I stick to Ogunquit Beach, which has not been that productive, is that she knows where I am at all times and can walk down and sit on the beach with me while I'm fishing. It's a concession that makes both of our lives easier. I don't envy you guys with young kids (although I wouldn't mind being your age again). Our kids are all grown, and while we paid the price early in our lives, the freedom to do what we want and when is wonderful.
