Close call with disaster
Well I've been on vacation and refinshing my wide pine floors. Hand sanding because of cupping and Tremont Hand cut nails , so I sanded, stained and hand rubbed boiled linseed oil on it LOOKS GREAT!!!!!!!.
BUT after clean up today I put a couple of rags together on top of a plastic garbage can in the shade and yes I thought things would be OK . but
I was inside my house just messing around checked my wood stove and out of the corner of my good eye I SAW FLAMES
my entire area closed in by a stockade fence with my lawn stuff all garbage cans a small area 8x10 but attached to the house was in FLAMES by my putting 2 rags together with linseed oil on then they self combusted causing the fire
I was lucky the hose was connected I ran like no tomorrow got the hose and doused the fire out yes it was my fault for not thinking about the combustabilty of linseed oil even in shade and being cool outside , I was just talking to Mike CC about the disposal of rags and I thought I did the right thing.
Well I got the fire out and learned a lesson and I'm so lucky there was very little damage , I can replace garbage cans and my fence and lawn equipment . I have done this floor work many times and this never happened so it just goes to show you to not be lax in your disposal of any rags it's a lesson well learned and I'm so lucky I was home at the time ,usually I'm away on Sat's visiting my parents at the nursing home in the afternoon but I had to finish the job , back to work Monday
The guys who know me know how fire follows me around
everything is fine just learn from my mistake

When I saw your earlier post about sealing your floors with boiled linseed oil I almost replied to remind you to dispose of the rags in water as MikeCC suggested....man are you lucky!

that small voice (thought) that almost made you reply... is the hardest one to listen too...
it's the intuition ... after many years of trying, i am now finally listening to it.....
because it's always right...

My next door neighbor decided to refinish some furniture in his basement a couple years ago......
Lucky to make have made it out alive.
Capt. Obvious (me) woke up the wife with the sound of fire engines and the sight of billowing smoke with the words, "I think the house next door is on fire."

Link,
You have a thing for rags and fire..... Wasn't it a rag that ignited under the hood of your truck at a Leg a few years ago?

Link as others have said, rinse them in a bucket of water, then lay them out flat not piled on top of each other. Shade does'nt matter it is the heat given offf by the linseed oil as it is drying..

So another Noob thing, if you apply to much to your floor would your floor spontaneously combust?
(and if so, Link should be fortunate he does not have wooden floors in the boat )

That was too close link
were the rags crumpled at all? hanging them laid out flat so air can circulate might work but your best bet is to place in a can of water

Glad you are ok
lesson learned I guess
If you read the can, I bet it mentions about proper disposal
