A question about cars - maintenance, etc.

I am reaching out to those of you who are knowledgable about cars - mechanics, etc. While my car is at idle at a traffic light or parking spot, it seems like I am getting the smell of the exhaust in my car, but I am not seeing the exhaust ... it just started over the weekend - I just roll down my window but have to believe it's not healthy if I am smelling that.

Do you think it could be a whole in the muffler (there's no extra noise though)? Which I have to believe wouldn't make that much of a difference in the interior of my car.

Or maybe it could be oil burning on the engine, maybe there's a leak there? Is either of the two more likely?
Appreciate any insight you guys may have.

Thanks

Stick a rag in the tailpipe and listen underneath for where it's leaking.
What kind of vehicle.

Subaru Outback Wagon - 2002 - i have to be honest, while I like the car, bought it new in 2002, for the money I'm not overly impressed.

Also, now that I have a family as well, it's too small - I always have a problem as to where to put the family with my fishing gear in the car ...

thanks

How old is the car?
Take a look at the whole system and see if you have any leaks after the cat. I say after the cat because a leak before the cat would normally set off an idiot light.

Do like I said and plug up the tailpipe with a rag and check underneath, also check up at the exhaust manifold, I've seen them crack before.

Check while the rag is in the tail pipe? Okay, thanks for the help.

To further explain F-18's tip- the rag will create back pressure which will increase visibility/sound of those leaks. dont burn yourself.

Thanks Eben, I was aware of that, I was really asking about checking the exhaust manifold ... when it comes to the mechanics of autos ...
