Jenn, there is a ton of bait all over Rhody keeping the fish in. Alot of the South County beaches are doing pretty good right now!!! From the Westerly beaches and all of the way up to Newport, you have a good chance at some nice fish. Places like Matunuck Beach, Charlestown beach and East beach. Give plugs and cut bait like bunker and squid a shot (of course... the live eel )... You said you were having trouble casting off eels. How were you hooking them???

RE:RI

John, thanks for the info! I will say one of the places you mentioned I was planning on...however I will not say which one because I wouldn't want some one to follow me there!!! (and the reason I couldn't go was because hubby afraid I would get attacked or something!!! That is unlikely because I am "heavy set and" ugly!!! HA!HA!HA!)Sorry I couldn't resist......

Well back to the bitter eel subject. My first experience with them I think I just kinda threw the hook threw the mouth and out the side (hey it worked, didn't catch anything though) then I was told to go into the fleshy part under the jaw and out the eye...THAT was a failure (I saw that coming before I even tried, just didn't sound right) and last but not least there was the "in the eye out the bottom of the jaw" which also did not work. I don't know if these people were just messing with me or what but I played the fool and tried it any way. Does any of this sound right? If it does I guess I just managed to screw it up somehow....

RE:RI

Jenn, many people run the hook in through the mouth and out an eye socket but I can't believe this is good for the eel. From what I have seen and what I have done (and I've tried through the eye), running the hook down the throat, and through the bottom is definitely the way to go... with the hook on the bottom, you have a small increase in snagging but I really feel that the eel looks more natural and will live longer. I won't even mention about missing the eye and drilling a hole through the poor guy's brain... Also what size hooks are you using. I use a 5/0-6/0 Mustad, frequently sharpened... You also may wish to cast a little lighter than how you may cast with a plug or weighted baits. Eeels don't cast very far under any cirumstances...

John, OK!OK! I will give it another shot! I got so ripped one night after loosing $5 to the drink in only about ten minutes that I swore I'd never touch another eel as long as I lived! It was very frustrating! I am using the 6/0 hooks but ............. I think I have to fess up! I think I may have been giving those poor things the ole' whiplash treatment!!!!!!!!! So, are you happy now? Your special accomplishment today: bringing me back to the "eel"side!!

RE:RI

You know what guys...DUH! It just hit me...this is the best way to decribe it...when it comes to fishing I have the major passion for it...he likes it but not as much I don't think. Anyway I realized that it is kind of like the reverse of some guys and their wives...They have to beg to go! So it really is the same thing only backwards!!!! I suppose I really shouldn't complain though, my two major hobbies in life are fishing and snowmobiling...both of which he took to when we met! I know a lot of couples who just can't get into each others hobbies at ALL!!!!! I guess I will take what I can get.
