smaller rod with smaller buty..any ideas?

i like my current get up. it decent over all. can do anything. but its damn taxing while plugging. mostly due to the butt being so damned long. it can do it.. but its not great.

so figure i will get a slightly smaller maybe 7-9ft range. not a problem. except every where i go the butts are annoyingly long. since id be pluggin with it, id like to be able to simply twitch wrist as opposed to having to move my whole arm thanks to the rod butt. i like my rod tip REAL low while plugin. so the butt lines nearly the entire length of my forearm. making subtle twitches a real pain. also something fairly stiff would nice.

any ideas?

yeah, the lami factory rods have really short butts.


if you want to cut the but just use a dremel diamond blade or at least that's what I have done.

you could also take it to a tackle shop if you feel uncomfortabel about cutting it. You're going to need a new butt cap anyway.

Sounds like the typical surf rod butt length isn't comfortable for you. You can either buy something that's not a surf rod (St. Croix inshore, Buccara, etc) or cut a surf rod back, which wouldn't be very difficult at all.

The long butt is designed to give you leverage on the cast, so you'll probably loose a little there. You may also need to add weight to the butt if the cut rod doesn't balance rod as well as it used to.

I've fished my 8' St Croix Premier more than any other rod this year. Short butt and enough backbone. 14 and 20# fireline are on my spools for the 460 Slammer. Check it out.

Go to a rainshadow 1088 and have it custom wrapped. You can either place the reel seat where you feel comfortable or simply wrap the rod and not use a reel seat. You can use a fugi tape on seat and use electricians tape to secure it. Find the exact spot that is comfortable for you. If you want to permanantly secure the seat, have your rod man wrap and flexcoat the seat where you want it. You also said you wanted a thin handle, this will give you exactly what you want.
Nothing beats a custom rod!! You can plug all night and never get crippled.
