I just found it on my own. My father comes once every other year and complains the whole time about how boring it is. I will say I have turned a couple of my friends on to it though.
I love this sport!

My grandfather had a cottage on town beach in Sandwitch and (before the hurricane of '38) a cottage on Gooseberry Island. I remember him taking me and my mum flounder fishing there (I was maybe 3-4 years old, 1957 ?). My mum and dad would go camping at Shawme-Crowell State Forest and go fishing when the tide was "right". A 1961 Rambler wagon and a 13 foot silver "Scotty" trailer. Dad and his bamboo pole..those were my "good old days" memories.

My Dad used to take my brother and I fishing for scup and flounder off of the bridges and jetties in Harwichport. We used to use seaworms and clams. I was hooked immediately. Kinda funny, my father always enjoyed the occasional striper and bluefish boat trip, but never had the passion I do. But I thank him none the less.

I was so young I dont really recall the first time but I was probably around four years old at the Scituate Town Pier drop lining for Flounder with my father and that was it, I was hooked. I fished every chance I had ever since. Some other early memories were Mackerel trips out of Scituate on the St. Joseph with my grandfather. It's been a long trip from those Flounder and Macks to Giant Bluefin and everything in between. Now I see my primary job to be instilling the same love of fishing into my kids and grandkids.

My father used to take me out on his buddies boat when I was a kid. We'd fish for the mackeral they were going to liveline when they went for tuna.
But my brother-in-law Bobby got me hooked some years ago down in Wellfleet. Plug casting from his 19' blue searay seville I landed my very first striper on a plastic blue and white popper off of elephant rock in Wellfleet. Since it was a shortie we never measured. Since then I've been hooked on them more than they have been hooked by me...lmao

Thank you for starting this thread
Both sides of the family are saltwater fisherman. I grew up in Swansea; my front yard was the cole’s river. If I wasn't fishing I was digging for clams/quahogs. Every morning before school/work my dad was up first and if he saw fish, we would be on the beach in very short time. Some days he would scream fish up, just to get me out of bed to go swimming. We had a very small herring run that was within a hundred yards of the house. Only people in the neighborhood had easy access to it. I have not heard of any herring being spotted there in over 20 years.
When I went away to college, it was a real shock not to see the water every morning or fish on a daily basis. My freshman year was my 1st freshwater fishing experience.
I really miss living on the water; my parents still live in that house. Sitting on the porch w/ a cocktail on a sunny afternoon brings me back to that carefree time.
My dad caught a 64lb bass in 1966. That fish has been on my parent’s wall since. There is a picture of me @ 9 months next to Dad holding the fish by the gills. I still look at that fish in awe, beats my best by 22 lbs. So, I guess it was my father who got me hooked.
Writing this post leaves me feeling a little sad. I miss the old days, fishing w/ both grandfathers as well as dad and other family members. Dad is more into sailing now, he still casually fishes in front of the house or when out on the sailboat. Grandfathers are both gone, Papa fished into his 80’s.
Thank you for starting this thread. It made me realize how much simple fun can be had while fishing with family. I guarantee that I will get my father out on my boat more often because of the memories this post brought back.
I guess I can't remember not fishing.

My uncle Charlie Frates, told me I had to be old enough to tie my own shoes to go on his boat. Within a couple of weeks I was catchin scup and tautaug on that sweet old Lyman. I still have a thing for old penn reels with the marble torpedo handles.

My father took me once to Great Pond in Eastham in a leaky row boat when I was seven or eight. He wouldn't bait the hook or touch the rod in case the Fish & Game guy was looking from the bushes, because he didn't have a license. I clearly remember that day.
Then they bought me a Zebco push button reel with a tin of fifty hooks and some weight and I was off and running. I wasn't ten yet when they let me walk to and then ride my bike to all the ponds and fish them. Muddy Pond, Herring Pond and all the others in Eastham. It was a great time in my life. I just wished I realize that more then than now.

My Mother taught me to Fish, using clamworms, clamnecks, squid, for Tautog, Flounder, and Squeteague. With the ol fashioned tarred marlin line, on the wood squares and a black tautog hook, 2oz sinkers...... I learned in Bristol, RI, and then took this experience to our winter home in DC, where I would fish for Shad, Catfish, Perch , small mouth BASS, pickeral, and giant Carp in the Potomac River. I have Fished religiously in evvery body of water I can, since.Mostly SALT.I have crossed the Atlantic, fished the whole way, have fished for TigerFish in Botsana, Africa, NZ, and Europe to Maine.....My Mother passed away in 1983, and everytime I fish, whether in my Peapod in Wickford Harbor for Bass n Blues, or trolling in the Bay, I always remember our Times together. In a few more days, My Son Will Turn 16!,( I am freaking out) he has fish in his veins, a real natural, pisces type, that has spent more hours actually catching fish than most have even tried. Fishing together and seperately, has bonded us firmly. , he has a junior lobster liscence, in Manomet, mows the lawns, likes the girls, etc.....I am proud that we have this to share, I have definetly benefitted from fishing with him and vice versa, each time is a new adventure , and many of " do you remeber when?" scenarios......fishing is a real sport, intellectual, sportmanship, ettiquette, finesse, and calculated know how, not to mention all the luck available ,lol....thank you, stephen

Dad started me on the lake when i was bout 3-4 then the salt about 7. First trip i remeber was flounder fishin LI sound from a 13 foot whaler. IT all turned into the surfcasting addiction when i was bout 13, used my granfathers stuff down in CT. Never had the oppertunity to fish with him, he was in his 80's when some little punk 13 year old kinda addopted his old fishing stuff.

My Dad went bass fishing 3 nights a week (by boat), if I had good grades in school I could go with him if the tides were not too late. I generally was ready, homework done and dressed and packed when he come home from work. He also took me surf casting at night. I thought that was the coolest thing ever...

Too far back to remember the actual first time, as I grew up with Western Long Island Sound a few houses away, a nice protected cove that had pretty much everything available and great for little kids to wander around the neighborhood fishing ... but I'd have to say it was my dad ... as I got older, later in elementary school and Junior High, friends of his took me under their wings ... and show'd me the ropes for fishing for stripers and blues ...

I bet we could probably compile a pretty good collection of stories of the early days of fishing from this group ... could be a good book ... I'm sure most of us have many many that could be included ...
