my best guess would be that most people claim bass dont like wire!!!! and with mono you dont ALWAYS loose to the blues....

Angler preference.

Why do stores sell you mono instead of steel when the blues are around? 'Cause you'll buy it - seriously, you shuld buy both but it's also cheaper to buy good hooks seperately from pre made rigs. You can put on wire when the gators are in and keep the mono lines when it's just bass...

I'm in the group that much prefers mono over steel for bass and I'll often still fish a heavy mono leader if blues are around.

Oh, and before you start complaining about the costs of hooks & fishfinders, try eelfishing for big gals when a school of blus shreds them up

When I know there a blues around, but i don't want to switch to
steel cause I may get a bass.
I tie on a mono leader of 80# about 2 feet long. I also use long shank hooks----special brand (shhhhh!!).
So if I get a blue, I can get it in b4 he cuts through the heavy mono (usually), and I still have a chance at a bass.

Good Luck..
