New OTW TV Episodes

I've caught a few of the new OTW tv espisodes lately and I like em' as always. It seems that the whole crew is becoming much more comfortable on camera and really having a good time making the show.
One question though: When are you going HD??????

ok, when are we having Striped-Bass Surfcasting TV?

that would be awesome, just pitch blackness the whole timewith the occasional light shined on landed fish.

Not to be a nay sayer but I find most of their shows more boring then golf shows and I don't play golf. Just watching people pull up fish for 20 minutes with a 30-second show and tell does not do much for me. Watching them drag a spreader bar around for 60 pound tuna, I can't even understand how that could be interesting to the people doing it never less watch it.

Need to put in more how to and less reeling in fish. More surf fishing would also be nice.

In my view one of the problems with "surfcasting TV' is that there are few sponsors of such programing and it appeals to a minority. You need someone who is selling big ticket items to foot the bill... and...no offense, but surfcasting is a kind of a poor mans sport, relatively speaking. Boats, motors, electronics, and other big ticket items are the kind of thing that sponsors want to move and hence is the reason you see fishing shows that are boating based. Sure you see a segment or two from the surf but that is not what is paying the bills.
Also most surfcasters are generally looking to spend as little as possible on their sport, while guys with boats spend more $$$$ in one fuel up then most surfcasters spend all season. Yeah I know you have the expensive reels and other surf gear but still they are small ticket items and even then, most guys don't even buy high end stuff, they go for the low end. Don't believe me...hang out in a tackle shop and talk to the owners..most guys don't buy $600+ reels and $100+ plug bags...they sell more cheapo R&R combo's and discount plugs and many plugbags consist of army surplus ammo bags with shampoo bottles.

I am not knocking it...I enjoy surfcasting like you but it is what it is. The fact is for quality TV you need to pay for it with big money and there isn't any in surfcasting. In fact, FW fishing for largemouth dwarfs all saltwater fishing combined and earth is covered 3/4 with SW. Yet I have no interest in FW fishing whatsoever, it just does not appeal to me. Why? because seeing a guy toss a bait in the water and hook up with a fish then nearly rip the fish clean out of the water within seconds of being hooked without any fight what so ever is insane. And the angler is excited about this? When I see a FW segment of any kind (on OTW or any other show) I delete it, I rarely watch any FW fishing. Yet there is soooo much of it available on TV. Sometimes I will watch a peacock bass show...at least they take some drag and put up a fight. I honestly would rather watch golf. (but I enjoy golf, playing and watching) and women's golf is esp interesting..which is actually getting pretty hot! Have you seen some of these babes in High Def?! I am telling you some of this should get a Mature rating. I would love to play a round with them (or take them fishing!) but that is for another thread.

to me, and i know some of you guys know them, the OTW guys seem truly excited about what they are doing, it brings an amateur-ish charm to the show. I think they do spend time talking to the charter captains on what they are doing and give diagrams of the set ups. As far as sutfacting, in this area its a night time game and I enjoyed the McKenna show, but its not very appealing seeing 2 guys stand on rocks in the dark. you cant see the hits or lure/eel action. I dont watch the freshwater or ice fishing episodes, its not my thing.

yeah, that was kind of what my attempt at a joke was aimed at, surfcasting TV would not be that exciting. Maybe if you were in montauk and got some good day time blitzes on film, that would be very cool.

I agree, 20 minutes of "hey, look, we're catching fish", not very exciting, and the camera work is pretty bad, not to mention that I've never seen a show where they caught anything really large. Same can be said for Northeast Angling, but instead of two New York guys catching small fish with bunker, OTW is two New England guys catching small fish with eels. I will, of course, watch both shows because they are the only fishing shows that feature fishing in this area, but I long for something better.

I set a reminder OTW and NE Angling every week and watch them. That being said, if its sweetwater i dont pay much attention. I enjoy the saltwater but like many would like to see some more surfcasting. There was a show On the Hook, but i dont think its one anymore. It was about the same as the others, but for some reason half the time the audio was so bad i couldnt hear it. This time of year any saltwater fishing show is better than 90% of the crap on TV.

Everything is better on the rocks.

I agree that for the sponsors the money is with the boat people but much of what goes on during surf fishing can be transferred to boat fishing. But just watching people reel in fish is just boring, at least to me. I don't even bother to turn on the show anymore.

I also got to say that I'm starting to feel the same way about OTW magazine. For a long time it was by far the best magazine for the striper fisherman but their focus has shifted away from striper fishing. While this may be a good business move for them it I'm not sure how much longer I'll be getting it.

I think On the Hook has moved to CN8, channel 3 on comcast. I do enjoy the hook and cook segment on the show.

HAMMER TIME!
