Guitarist Extraordinaire

Guitarist extraordinaire. Best IMO. No style he couldn't handle. Shame he ended his own life way too short.

Larry he is the worlds best unknown player IMO. He played the DC club circuit mostly. You should hear his jazz stuff. Completely different than his country and blues stuff. His jazz band was called the Redneck Jazz Explosion.http://bigmo.com/rejaexvoi.html. I have most of his stuff. Hard to find.
Strange in that he and Roy Buchanan had a very similar sound, although DG was way more versatile, and they both had trouble lives and both committed suicide. What a shame.

Here is another incredible guy for you Larry. Being that you are a big Clapton fan. He has been his rhythm guitarist on several concert tours. He is also British and playing country style. Looks like a Barry Manilow clone. Super clean player. Also has Danny Gatton and Vince Gill in the second clip.

Saw Gatton and NRBQ play at Hunter College in NYC. He was incredible player with chops to spare. The album with Robert Gordon, the Humbler is awesome. It was a shame he could never find a niche. I have always felt it was weird that Gatton and Roy Buchanan were both products of the DC club scene, played a tele, and were tipped for greatness. Neither ever had a great band or material to put them over to a wide audience. Both took their own life.

would have loved to see him live. Most of the great ones don't seem to ever appeal to the masses, but I like that just fine.

Scotty Anderson is another guy in that tele school that is worth checking out. He also suffers from the I play so hot my material can be crap syndrome but he is a good player. Right after I graduated from college (1979) my friend and I went down to Nashville to hang out for a bit. It was amazing how many good players were all over the place. Same thing a few years later in Austin. Every bar had a guy that would make your jaw drop. Never saw that too much when I lived in NYC except on the jazz scene when Mike Stern used to play at 55 bar.

Let me know what you think. They have 2 more out also. Cream of the crop musicians and guests. Another one, Jaco, who mastered the instrument but had mental illness problems and was killed from a beating he received while down on his luck. I never realized he was such an accomplished writer.

Find Bill Kirchen. Listen to him pull magic from a Tele. He was good way back when with Commander Cody, but is so good now that it will make you smile like a little kid on the last day of school.

That was pretty hot! Arlen Roth is no slouch either. It looks like it was Gatton's band backing him. At least the keys/sax guy I remember seeing with Gatton.

yup- that is gattons band backing him.
He is a pretty interesting kid, I beleive he is legally blind and comes from Maine. He was originally signed by Steve Vai's label. His latest music is in the southern rock vein and not as cool as the gatton-ish stuff but I guess he has to find his own voice.

The most amazing Gatton playing to me ios on teh jazz record with Joey Defrancesco, they do "well you needn't" by Thelonious Monk at a break neck speed. That is a tough tune at a medium tempo, but Danny pull off a beautiful solo.

Defrancesco's organ playing is spectacular. I like anything DG did with the red neck jazz explosion. So many great low profile players in the world, so little time
