P/U Bed Rack
Anybody come up with a good bed rack. I have a 6' bed and want to be able to lock a one piece rod and reel down so I can walk away from it w/o worry. Since 4' of rod is past the tailgate, anyone ever have a stone shatter a blank? Any ideas out there?
Thanks in advance

how about a box in the back that u can put reel in, and H bar in the side bed holes up front with mop handles then the only thing sticking out will be the tips.

only time i have shattered blanks was when they were on the roof of my truck. both times the culprit was a morning dove. one bounced off the windsheild and into the rod. the other got skewered. i drove the rest of the way to the coast with it as sort of a morbid warnig to all other birds not to mess with me cause i was now in such a good mood!

sad thing about is... if a thief wants it bad enough, they will get it. locks only keep honest people from stealing your stuff. but have you considered keeping a rottwieller or pit bull in the bed of your truck while you are away. then again they would probably steal your dog too.

I can picture the dove shish-ka-bob
If you guys are walking and plugging a beach and you brought two one piece rods, one for bait or light stuff and one for you larger plugs and you own a truck, where do you put the other rod?

Hey Mark - What type of truck do you have? I have a Thule ski rack on top of mine(Toyota T-100 extended cab). Don't have a cap. Works very well.

Since this thread has come around to roof racks, I have been waiting for the opportunity to inquire. I have a 2001 F15 Super Crewcab (the four door). Ford does not make any permanent roof rack to attach something like a Thule rack, so I guess I'm looking for something I can take off. The skewered squab on the surf rod didn't sound like fun, so ideally I guess I want something where the rod butts face forward and tips back, reel on or reel off, doesn't matter. I know it's just a matter of time before the tips sticking out between the tailgate and the tonneau cover are history.

Hey Jimbo - You could go with a Yakima ( www.yakima.com) rack which is very similar to the Thule. The racks come with special "feet " to attach to roof of your truck and the rain gutters. A couple bars span across the truck. Ski racks are attached to the bars and then you can lock up your rods. This is similar to the setup that I have on my truck. I always drive with the butt of the rods forward. The larger ski racks can hold about six rods with reels no problem. Check out the site and put all your truck information in and it will tell you what you need. Good luck.

Its a Ram Reg Cab 6' Bed. Not alot of room on the roof. I was gonna but a Track Rack but then I thought that would be a little extreme. With the ski-rack setup, can't somebody still take your reel pretty easily. I'll think of something, Thanks

If I'm going to be away from my truck for any extended period of time, I just take the reels off and leave them in the truck, hidden. Only takes a minute or less to put it back on the pole and fish. I remember somewhere where a rack also locked your reels, just can't remember.
