DSC VHF MMSI questions

Do most of you that have a DSC capable VHF have it hooked up?

I just registered for my MMSI number at boatus.com. A little apprehensive on plugging in the numbers so as NOT to accidentally send a distress call.

Also the wires coming from the back of my vhf are grey and green and my gps has red white and black.

I assume green is ground but does grey goes to white??

Last question.
Is DSC for emergency only?

from what I read at boatus.com your mmsi number is kind of like your cell phone number for the radio and can call any other mmsi number.

ok
in case anyone else runs into this.
for the humminbird 787c2 gps portion of the unit (as far as i can tell)

white = nema out +
black = nema out -
red = no idea... maybe to power your vhf from the gps unit??
---------------
ICOM302
green = nema - in
yellow = nema + in

Turn on nema in gps menu on humminbird and vhf

other questions still on the table

from what i understand, DSC is not for emergency only.

If your gps is capable, it can display your freind's location on your maps via DSC if you program in their mmsi number.

I also belive that you are correct in your assessment that "msi number is kind of like your cell phone number for the radio and can call any other mmsi number"

But I have no first hand experience, only what I have read.

i bent my wookie

Yes, This all still works off your VHF antenna. The higher the antenna the better.
