Newbie canal question. Bait vs. wood/plastic

First off I just wanted to say hi.

I just found this site last week and I think it's absolutely amazing.

I recently moved to wareham, MA and finally went fishing for the first time last night. I started off at the Narrows, right behind M&D's and got a few schoolies on little 3" slugos. Then I moved to the east end of the canal and tried some 9" and got nothing.

Im thinking of hiting the canal again tonight and was wondering what the best time to fish it would be. Also, do people have more luck drifting bait (pogies, squid) or just working some soft plastics around the rocks. Also, what are good wood plugs for this time of the year in the canal

I'm not looking for any secret spots but just some general advice. Any help would be appreciated.

Love this board and looking forward to spending a lot more time here in the future. Thanks guys

My personal bait of choice for the canal is eels... but its prolly a bit too early for that...

Prolly some big plastic shads would be good right now...

Go back to M&D's ... Mike has CC Canal 2008 Tide Tables books (free)... There is usaully a gang there you can ask or talk to Mike about reading the book .. Things to pay attention too in book .. RR Bridge Current Turns ,,am,pm? RR Bridge high,,low? ***** minus tides .. book in military time too boot .. spring time ..fish from end of parking lot at the herring run to the west end .. You can bounce stuff jiggs,,lead and bait(sand eels),,rubber on the bottom when its moving fast ,, small window to fish on top ,,polaris ,,pencils either side of slack .. Anyways ,, You found M&D's ,, you found the right place ,, hang there ..

Heading down tomorrow afternoon for the west end outgoing. Will be tossing chunks hoping for over 28". Anyone pull out any keepers down there yet? Hope I bring them in from buzzard's.
