Black Flies

I fished a sandy beach with dunes this week. I'm usually on rocky shoreline. Got swarmed by black flies and spent more time shooing flies than working plugs. I never had this issue before.

Is there a black flie season, and do some of you avoid areas like this at certain times during the year.

I fished the west branch of the ausable in the adirondacks last week. Black flies were so oppressive I thought I saw a small child get carried away. That may have been the 100 deet induced stupor and by the way the deet didnt make a dent in them.
