I deal with this problem by just hooking on the whole fish.

i have had way more luck with the heads this year. it seems like the blues always hit the tails so id throw the heads into the schools if live lining wasnt working and usually by the time the head was on bottom i was on

Years ago when I used to chunk drift the canal, as many did at that time, when ever I gutted a bigger fish it usually had a head or 2 in them. People used to chum up the holes and would toss the head along with the other parts and then put a big juicy middle chunk on the hook and drift. I figured that the fish were finding these heads on the bottom and gobbling them up so I would chum the whole fish and use only the head on the hook. You would not a have as many hook ups but it was usually a large fish. I vote heads.

Crazy Al says you give the head to yer hook,
and give the tail to yer worst enemy!!

The Crazy One also says to find yer trophies at night,
and feed them again in the day with BIG pogie HEADS!!
he says they'll still be there,,,,,,,,,,,,,

and i agree with the wise Professor, the idea of chumming with
at least one pogie works for me. the first one outta tha bag always goes
to the sea. with the second one i make a v cut about 1/2 way down
and throw the head half on an 8/0 gammi. then i separate the gut
section, and 1/2 again the remaining tail section and feed that also to the seas,,,,,,,,,,,,
puts the blood right into the Striper Highway.

then, just WAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIT!

tried chunking this Am and it was BRUTAL at best!
ever since i've been using live and rigged eeeeeeels,
the positive results have taken me off of the dead sticking game.
will give chunking another shot tonite, at one of me favorite udl's.

hope this helps, danno1

Yeah, I'm trying the heads too. John Marino (American Sportfishing Charters) here in Long Island Sound says to use heads especially at dusk to night.
