Lie Detectors & Striper Tournaments

ASA tournaments require everyone in the winner circle to submit to a lie detector test. They don't mess around.

Should the Striper Cup make that same requirement?

The rules in the Striper Cup appear to be a little different, only subject to a polygraph if a grievance is filed.

Do people agree with this? As fishermen, do we take pride to the fact that this tournament is honor based? There is so much more to surfcasting than the catching. You will always here people making false claims about others catches and what they caught it on- would a polygraph be the solution?

DISCLAIMER
I am not saying anyone is cheating (I am good friends with many of the anglers in this tournament, and they do catch), just opening it up for discussion. This year has been incredible from the surf, I believe all the notable catches as I have had some myself - just released the fish. Just want to hear some thoughts.

I have not fished the OTW tourney. I said I would never fish tournaments again. I tried freshwater tourneys in the past only to witness with my own eyes cheating taking place. I am not saying every tournament has cheating taking place but its always a possibility (I guess I have been scarred for life).

Are lie detectors the answer? Who knows....chances are sceptics and jealousy will still prevail.

Simplify.......

Those who cheat or "bend" the rules have to live with themselves! There is no pride in a victory which is gained in an underhanded manner! They will always know they cheated.........and that in itself is justice enough.

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

There already is a lie detector clause in the OTW tournament. I tend to believe they would never put out the sheckels to administer but I think my chances at a truck would increase if they decided to test the 10 monthly winners. Tournaments have always brought out the worst in people and I'd guess this event is no exception.

ASA took a lesson from FLW with the polygraph.
With big $ prizes (FWL 10 - 50K ) the lie detector is absolutely a good thing.
In the past ASA was full of cheating and Ken Wente has now taken over and cleaned it up (i'm told)
Cheaters could care less about " having to live with them selves" , they only care about the $$$

Agreed as well.

I've signed up each year for OTW and then for the most part just not really cared all that much each year. I love competitive fishing but at the same time a lot of what comes with it just isn't worth it. It IS out there, hell I've even seen cheating in the Fall Surfcasting Club Challenge which is essentially a charity tournament. At the same time I think there's a lot of jealousy and some people just can't help but speculate or intentionally start rumors with no truth at all to them.

I think, to some degree, if you catch well in a big tournament (or catch large in general) you better have a thick skin because someone, some where, right or wrong, will be out to undermine the efforts that person put in. USUALLY without any proof.

There's a lot of be said of just never announcing what, when, where, or if you are catching...

Test them all. Would not be suprised one bit if the leaderboard looked a little(or alot) different if they tested. Cheaters are low-life scum, and should be exposed.

Even if the guy didn't catch the fish he can pass the test.If his friend who caught it threw the fish up in the air and he caught it he'll be able to fool the lie detector test."Did you catch the fish?","yes".Also by sticking a hook in the fish's mouth."Did you personaly hook that fish ? ","yes".If there's a way to cheat they always will.

The age old dilemma of cheating in fishing tournaments. Sadly, there is no easy way to create honor among (thieves) anglers. What is the way around it? Lie detector? I'd support it

I agree, if it's within the budget, Use the device - seems a little silly unless it affects you, but like stated above, there are dishonest people out there and plenty on here as well
Not sure how true it's results are though, I've always felt they were beatable, but then again.......I think hypnotists are a joke too.

Isn't there some type of "Lie-Detecting" software that you could deploy to expose the thats floating around _ _ _ _ sometimes??

cheating is always going to be a problem in tournaments. always has been, always will be. i was really nervous that i was going to be accused last year because i weighed in a 44.25 and a 44.45 within a few days. I even called OTW and offered to send pictures that clearly showed that they were different fish (one short and fat, one long and lean) and offered a witness to one of the catches that was not in the tournament but they told me that it was unneccessary and that noone had any suspicions about my fish.

i think in the case of the striper cup, you just have to trust others IMO - giving a lie detector test to everyone and anyone who wins anything seams like too much, and picking and choosing who to give it to has its own problems. I think people would just stop entering if it came to that, and then others would accuse them of not being able to hang once cheating was eliminated, when they really just didn't want to deal with the BS.

it really would be a shame though if a few months from now word got out (as it always seams to in this community) that someone wasn't on the up and up and that it cost someone else.

dangles, take comfort in the fact that your chances at the truck would be equal with or without cheating. we all saw your pic and know that your fish is a legit winner, and anyone who cheated to win a monthly took the place of someone else who would have one it legit, so you have a 1/10 shot either way since you can't win more than one monthly yourself.

Striper cup has some big money prizes, therefore plenty of incentive for people to cheat, IMO.

I suspected some cheating going on last year. They said the guy agreed to a polygraph so they didn't give him one?I was in a contest once where the guy who took the $1500.00 light tackle prize was a local commy who wouldn't know what to do with anything less than a broom stick and 60lb test. You just have to compete for the fun of it because the only way to police tournaments is to be watching every one every time they fish.No yoyoing, yeah right!

Why would you think fishing is any different than everyday life. Lots of people cheating out there in every aspect of life. Hell I cheated at monopoly last nite with my 7 year old daughter but I spilled the beans right after as I couldn't stand the guilt. If the winner had to be given a lie detector then I would probably never enter again, not that anyone would give a crap if I didn't enter.. Isn't the whole idea of this type of thing to be good clean honest fun and not life and death, cut throat. Hell I like to win but cheating at fishing just doesn't seem to be worth it. Now monopoly that's a whole different ball game.

cheaters never prosper, and
losers NEVER win!!

old addage that still rings true for iffin they CHEAT
to win, have they sincerely WON anything???

and Fish MOJO has a sneaky waaaay of catching up to folks.
it's a shame that there is an element of anglers out there that will
attempt to WIN at all costs ~~even at the sake of their once Good Name.

i have nothing against lie detectors if the powers that be deem them necessary.
while it does seem invasive, if you have nothing to hide,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,then why not?

Cheating....

I am 100% in favor of a Lie detector test given to the winner of a tourney.

Whats to prevent someone stuffing frozen Mackeral into a big striped bass to make it weigh more?
