Mac wood

Not Dave Mac wood, I wish, but Macintosh apple wood. I band sawed up a big chunk from an apple tree I took down this spring. Wood looks really beautiful much like maple but harder it seems, rock maple maybe. Hard, tight grain. Going to rough turn it and let it dry. You can see I have another big trunk part still left. Good thing we have a big band saw. Make some nice needles I would think. Anyone need some apple for their smoker? If not the scrap is going in the wood stove.

Paul, if your up to the challenge, turn me a mold to make some glasses and i will make you a set-

Apple or cherry is the prefered wood for molds..

I'd love some for the smoker, if you have enough. Doesn't need to be the pretty stuff. Getting tired of mesquite. Kevin and I will figure out a pick up, as we're reasonably close to one another.

No problem. Both you guys can split it up. I still have another 3 ' long by 12" dia. piece to go so wait till then. A couple weeks. I won't be giving you the pretty stuff. I get plenty, smallish stuff every spring at pruning time too.

Paul, I was going to do the same thing years ago when I cut down an apple in my backyard, never did bother though. If you have a blank or 2 to spare ,I'd love to try a darter or something different.
Air dried wood is the best for plugs I think.

Anytime Bruce. It is still a little moist. Stuff is heavy too but could be a little water weight. Think it would work perfect for darters, needles and such. Problem with apple is after many years of pruning you get many off shoots, branches, each year and it is hard to find non knotted areas but the knots seem to be very tight grained so i don't think they will cause a problem, although we will have to see after it dries a bit.Thru drilling could be a challenge. Capesams told me to rough turn them even though they are still wet. He says they will dry up nice. He would know. I have no experience with drying wood. Be fun though going from tree to plug.

How do you like those apples?

Just took down a cherry tree, a peach tree is next. Fruity plugs. (don't sound right) Have a coupla of red cedars that need trimming. Thanks for passing the drying info along.
