You can't mistake Mars--it's usually copper red. Mercury is normally too low in the sky to be seen, and it's not readily visible to the naked eye. So if there was a third planet, it would probably be Saturn.

Update--what you saw may have been the space shuttle, not a third planet. I'm told it was visible there around 5:30.
