Kicking in your own door.

Jane's daughter got stuck in her room had to be to work in a few minutes.The damn knob would turn but not operate the striker.
Door opens inward so not many options other than removing the knob and trying from there and that was a no go.Hollow core door,one kick and I now have door with lots of glue and a dozen clamps on it.

Par for the course these days.

Just occurred to me that I should've posted this in the Grumpage forum.A move there would be appreciated.

At the time I was pissed.$7 for a knob set and a 1/2 hour of my time ain't so bad.

Imagine if that had been a solid would door.I'd still be up at Lowes buying a whole new prehung door,trim stock and of course a knob set.

True story...

Several years ago my grandmother who lived alone (in her 80's) at 8500 feet in Colorado bought one of those life alert necklaces in case she fell.

She noticed that they had the wrong area code in the paperwork, so she called and they told her to press the button so they could see the Caller ID that came in...then they could update the records.

She pressed the button and went to bed.

And was awoken by the local fire department smashing down her all steel high-security door to her breezeway.

5K in damage before it was all said and done

I was a cop in a small town in central Mass when we got a call from a concerned daughter that was worried about her elderly mother who lived alone. Her daughter, calling from N.J. told me her mother calls her every day and she had not heard from her in two days. I go to her house and find the car in the garage, no answer at the door or on the phone and the neighbors have not seen her. I check the windows and see a woman inside lying on the ground. The doors are all locked so I call the ambulance and FD and kick in the door.

I found out the woman was fine and only napping. She has a bad back and was lying on the hard surface. She took her hearing aids out so she could sleep. The medics gave her a once over and I believe they are still laughing at me.

Our towns repaired the door and frame for a few hundred dollars. Oh well, a lesson learned.

When you get a minute go to any interior door take an old credit card or any stiff laminated card insert the card at 45 degree angle above the lock aiming to hit the top corner of the slide ...press hard to bend the card around the door jam now while pressing the card in at a 45 wiggle it till its straight and pop your in …..cost nothing takes less then 15 seconds with practice even less.. this can be done on outside doors as well but it’s a little more tricky due to the extra security bar infront of the slide this needs to be done at an extreme angle and with a good hand….
