REC recoil guides ?

Does anyone have any info on these guides. I was contemplating building a GSB1201L with these guides. Considering their lightweight and shape memory when hit. Do they hold up to braid. The adds say they do but I would like to here from some one who has experience these. I would use a 40, 25, 20, 16, 12 & 12 SIC tip. I wonder with their lightweight they would help speed up the recovery rate in this blank. Is the 40 MM guide suffice w/a VS 250 and braid? I'm a traditionalist when it comes to building surf rods. 50's and 16 tips. Your expertise is welcomed.

cool idea! i have these as strippers on my gloomis glx flyrod, perform well and are bulletproof. don't know if they're braid friendly, but if they are i think they would be great on a surf stick.

I haven't used the guides. Depending on their height, you can probably go 40-25-16-10-10-10- and possibly 30HH-20H-12-8-8-8- (which is worth some test casts if all you plan to use is braid). I built a single SSU 10 footer using Fuji VSGs with the 1st guide plan (the collector guide is 33" from the retracted spool lip). It worked well with heavy fireline. Plan to try the second sequence on another 10 ftr this winter. Also, my experience with big spinners is minimal so don't use what I say as gospel. discuss some of the issues involved. Lots of advice, but not much from people who have actually built on 10 ft rods. Much of the advice is based on experience with 13.5 ft rods (which gives you more space to get down to small guides straight away). Good luck.

This is exactly the question I was looking for. That blank, cork tape grip, no reel seat, recoil guides along the lines of numbskulls second suggestion. I was thinking 30 as a first guide with 10s at the end. I definetly think the weight of the guides affects the recovery rate of the blank, think of it like unsprung weight in a car it is hard to damp and wants to keep bouncing. I'll use 20# Fireline and a 704, maybe someday a vs200.

i think i'm going to build an allstar 1208 using these, i'll use a 60mm titainium nitrate as first stripper. looking to make it as light and senstive (yeah i know 1208 senstive??) as possible.

Correct. The stiff graphite rod transmits vibrations 'better' (faster!) than the soft glass does.

Soooooooo.... How can soft flexible titanium alloy guides transmit vibration into your rod blank 'better' than stiff steel guide frames?

Seems to me they can't as the material will tend to damp vibration, not transmit it.

PS If durability and 'bang-ability' are the goal then the Recoils might be a good choice.

PSS Don, if you are going to fish braid on that Allstar why not go with smaller guides? I am running 40, 25, 16, 12, 10 ,10, 10 Fuji Alconite BMNAGs on a 1201M, at Sea Wolf's recommendation, and the rod is super sensitive (8 contact points between the line and the blank) and casts extremely well using Suffix.

jon- i have one 1208 with alconite concepts 40 thru 12. just looking for something new....rods are one of my sickness' .

Don't use a 60 mm guide. That is way overkill. The 40 is fine for the first guide and that reel.
I think the original 40 through 12 is a good layout. You may need to go with a 16 tip since the 12 tips are only available in a limited number of tube sizes while the 16 is available in many more tube sizes. I often use a 16 tip with a 12 last guide.

I look at not only the size of the guides but the number and locations as far as recovery. I also do not want to have to string and worry about lots of guides while fishing. So there is a trade off between the number and size.

The concept people use lots of small guides. They cut down the size of the stripper guide and they push it way out.

I'm rewrapping an old rod, not too sure on the type, but it is 9'6'' and pretty fast. I'd really like to use it just for plugging. Anyone have experience with the REC recoils for a rod like this? Just thinking of trying something new. Anyone think these are more suitable for braid (ie. less wear and tear on the guides)?
