Let's talk backups

So all the catastrophic issues lately have me trying to figure out a cost effective way of backing all the machines up.

I've considered a raid card and dual mirrored drives...nope because if something happens it happens to both drives and I'm screwed no matter what.

So I'm thinking of a large (500gig) external firewire drive. Thoughts/issues?

Ideas of what to use for software? Local geek guy says he likes Norton backup/restore standalone edition. I don't like Norton since they've caused more problems on previous computers...

Would like at least once a week backup only for catastrophic stuff...don't really care about day to day stuff.

Are you talking about data or the operating system as well.
Do your devices change on a daily basis or do you make a change say once a month?

Are you talking about backing up your Data or the entire image of the hard drive?

Symantec System Recovery is pretty slick for backing up an image of a PC/Server

I've been using it on my citrix boxes at work and loving it. If I make a change to the box that causes grief I can roll it back to an earlier dates image.....takes all of 3 minutes to do too.....

I don't think its that expensive either.....maybe $90

Scott,

Have you looked at the Drobo system at all? Pretty interesting alternative, and it has received lots of praise for being easy to use.
