College Pro Painters ?????
A nationwide business that "helps" college kids become a summertime painting contractor employing other college kids (all with little or no painting experience at the outset). The kid foots all the expenses, finds the jobs, hires the crews, and does/supervises the work. They then take 20% of net income to "advise him" as they go. Anyone ever work for these guys or have any experience with them? I'm not hiring them to paint my house, rather they are trying to recruit one of my sons, who is a college sophomore, to become a "contractor".

sounds like a scam to me. 20% for basically doing nothing is pretty good for them.

Used to see them around alot, usually near colleges.
Sounds like people are paying to use the Company Name.

It was actually started by a couple of kids one summer to earn money for school. What it is now I don't know.

One of my friends worked for one of them. It was supposed to be good money but he had trouble getting paid. The kid kept using the money to go on vacation and not paying anyone. Needless to say he didn't stay in business to long.

College Pro is a nation-wide chain and has been around for well over 20 years. I ran a crew in the Westborough/Marlboro area summers of '85 & '86.
No scams involved at all. We did some real quality jobs back then, probably tough to compete with the Brazilian and Guatemalan guys these days, however.

maybe scam wasnt the right word...and I am sure some crews are better than others....but I have seen some real bad work done by College Pro..and in my opinion some homeowners were taken advantage of......no good in my book...

I was recruited a few years ago, and a friend of mine actually did it. I was already working at a large commercial painting company and really wasn't interested at having to find my own jobs, hire/fire people, manage, and operate as a 19 year old kid. My buddy said it was a good learning experience but apparently he didn't make very much in the long run. I did help him out a few time and the quality from his crew was definitely sub par. Good idea, but could use a few adjustments. This economy may affect the amount of houses that will be painted this summer, especially those by college kids with no experience.

There was crew of Guatamalans doing siding in Whitman a few years ago. One kid was ten. He was scurrying up and down ladders bringing cut pieces to the sidewaller. Bad situation. The GC on the job swore he didn't know anything about it. They all disappeared overnight.
