I WAS a kid / we had snow storms every week ... 12" was nothing >.walked 15 miles to school in a blizzard ... weve heard this before / & said it to out kids a million times .. [[If you where alive when I was a kid}

I called my daughter today @ 12:30 to remind her to fillup all the vans && she told me the Cranston had called school off for tomorrow & E/G had early dismissal ;
I was on my way to a doctors appointment & I told her I.d call her after ...
I called her @ 2;20 & she told me just about the whole state was closed // WTF is happening to this f #$%^&*()_ world ;;

The fu %^&*() blizzard was in78 ..30 F #$%^&*() years ago >>>>>>>> F #$%^&*() people who weren,t even born yet are talk about it like they were in it ;;;;

Its 5:50 right now I,m going to start to watch the ^PM news ... Oh wait ...there won,t be any .. its going to be the 6PM weather that, swill last 15 minutes . 5 minutes of news & then 10 minutes of WEATHER ;;

of course my legs were alot shorter then

but i always remembered looking down at the floor
and there'd be puddles of ice water that melted off my "chino's"
(those were pants back then for you young-ins)

and my knees were always half dry and half wet
...and by the time school was out... you were finally dry.

thats funny Raven...it reminded me of when I had a Boston Globe paper route...lugging papers in the morning before school in the 5TH grade, I'd get to school with clothes frozen hard...... also loading up my sled for the Sunday route.......are there even paper boys anymore???

the pant legs were like starched stiff because they were frozen. there were no side walk plows then...you had to walk in the street and jump into the deep snow on the sidewalks to keep from being hit by a car...

one day i got hit though... son of a bitch knew it because i jumped straight up and bounced off his wind sheild then rolled over the roof hit the trunk and then hit the ground....while i watched him not even slow down....

where I lived / they used the garbage trucks to plow >>.chains & all ......... and that was the best .hookying behind them .. usually they didn,t see ya & ya got a good ride . until ya got where ya wanted to be or they hit a descent size bare patch ;;
With the cars / they usually saw us .. or two many kids got on one car & we would either make it loose control or the ass end would swerve tossing asses in the snow drifts ;;

Plus we always had plenty od snow & ice before Christmas & I don,t remember one kid that didn,t hustle to make as much as they could snow shoveling .
I can remember hoping that what houses we got had snow shovels ...because sucked ........ usually they were spades or coal shovels & that took forever & when the snow got sticky .. you would do one shovel of snow & then have to knock the snow that stayed on the shovel .>>against a tree / but usuallY

ya shovel snow if they get off the computer or away from the gameboy or tv or any of the other stuff.

my brother calls me, he says, ya got all your milk and bread and food for 2 years for the big snowstorm of the week? quick rush out to the stores to get that last slice of bread

funny as hell, I guess that mentality does go back to the blizzard of 78 but I don't get it myself. it's just snow, deal with it.



Mike, ice can wreck your boat but boats are made to be in the water. if you are worried, get a bubbler working there for when it gets cold.

Clamma I hear ya. Its #&@$^^* new england DEAL with it! SIck of people beotchin about the impending doom (snow storm) then hating on me because I actually LIKE snow. pissy cuz I must have "ordered this weather" hmm..if I could actually do that we would be buried by now......


Snow is like Mother Nature's make-up. Makes her more beautiful! oh yeah and it can be a lot of fun toooooooooo.

we used to call it skid-hoppin'........ride for miles...
and always shoveled snow for $$$....had to....how else were ya gonna get money ........you brought back a few good memories there clammer & raven..thanks

Ya Clammer, i know your too young to remember, but we had a blizard in 1948 where they had to plow the streets with bulldozers.

Every snow storm they would block off several streets for sleigh riding, no salt then.

The cars had high clearance then and one afternoon, Alan Fraizer was sledding down Woodland ave and as he crossed Elm as a car was driving past, he went right under it and outside the other side unscathed. No lie. : doh:

Kids would be on the hills by 9 AM and except for lunch and supper would sled till 10PM.

This one real steep hill we had for sledding ...you could get a great speed going down it by jumping from a running start and hitting the slope with ultra polished and waxed runners on your sled....

then at the bottom of the hill you could CRANK the steering hard left and spray snow twenty feet...(going sideways) and sometimes do a few wipe outs or roll overs to stop. That was GREAT fun !

because FRANKLY it was our territory and we had a claim on it....

daring them to plow us... even...and things sometimes got dangerous and NASTY....

and screwed it all up...

so, i formed a committee and we had an ICE ball production line and saved them in really cold spots
for the next storm.... STOCKPILED like rocks...

we waited in ambush for those BASTAGES to come
and we had our Christmas walkie talkies too
for reconnaissance missions....

10 kids throwing ice BALLs from 50 feet up hill was slamming those trucks soo hard that they finally called the cops...on us... so we'd just change neighborhoods.......
and ambush them again and again... until finally they sent out a negotiator for a PARLE` to hear all of our demands...

we reached a satisfactory arangement and they had to ask our permission for one, and had to leave some snow on the sides for sledding or the truce was OFF!

......we Ruled in those days...

We called it "mushing" and you needed to have the right boots and to tuck your pants into them, otherwise the snow/slush spray from your feet would shoot right up the cuffs.

We would grab cardboard boxes, rub candle wax on one side of the opened box and with the snow and ice on the hilly roads around our block. We had a few of them.

I say "let it snow, let it snow, let it f%^$*)G snow."
This is mother nature's way of saying "Slow Down!", although the road conditions will do the same thing.

First you had to steel wool the runners and then rub on Candle Wax.

The rich guys used "Butchers Wax". Karl still has some and uses it on his plugs.

I remember the days when the snow covered roads made it easy to hitch a ride holding onto the rear chrome bumbers of passing cars. If you were lucky to hitch onto a VW bug there was an opening in the middle of bumper to sit down

some car had a similar bumper that was made out of a tube,,, wasn't a vw ...more like a Studebaker or one of those older models....

so, i run up and grab hold.... and was having a great ride until i stood up a little and the driver saw me....

so he decides to loose his passenger and speeds up
so fast i had to let go...i was at my street anyways...

but the forward motion had me sliding on my chest for a long ways...50 feet easy..until i slid into a 4 inch deep puddle of slush and instantly scooped up 40 lbs of it... into my sweater and down my shirt chilling me like a snow cone.... i couldn't get home quick enough after that...

If we had a snow day like today when I was a kid we used to go down to Suicide Hill (the big hill south of King Park) and use whatever we could scavenge to make sleds and tobogans out of - the best one we had was a hood from a '53 Chevy we found on an abandoned car on the wharf - we could get 4 or 5 of us on it.

Little tough to steer away from the tall pines, however...
