Candy squeedle - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I call this a squeedle because it's a squid based on the needlefish profile I do. It's made of oak, about 7" long, and weighs about 3 ounces. I set my needles up to sink in a horizontal position or with the nose ever so slightly up. I shoot for about a foot per second.

This was an experiment where I was trying to learn about candy and transparent colors and layering epoxy. I also wanted to see if I could achieve a finish that had some depth and dimension. I underweighted the plug to try to account for the additional layers of epoxy....

To fill the oak after sealing, it took two epoxy coats, each sanded smooth. Then I did a base coat of gold, with an additional layer of copper on the back and some diagonal stripes down the side of the plug, a layer of epoxy, a layer of candy orange faded to the top of the plug, a layer of epoxy, a second layer of epoxy and a second coat of epoxy. Then I switched to a candy brandy wine red and hit only the areas with the copper base below. The color mixing of the two candies was wonderful with the resulting deep transparent red orange. The eyes were put on and two more layers of epoxy were added to finish the plug.

After it was all said and done, I’m wondering if I could have achieved the same effect with clear Createx coats between the paint colors and then 5 or 6 layers of epoxy to finish.

that is a great concept and turned out beautiful,

you can save some epoxy layers and get the effect of depth in the finish by combining your paint coats with a clear polyurethane as you airbrush, if you combine/alternate transparent colors and opaques you will intensify the effect, the poly addition will also allow any metallic colors to be more vibrant.....

Scott, Thanks for the advice! Apply the poly with the airbrush? Not sure I'm totally following you on the layering of opaques and transparents. If you're near Salem, a visit to your spray booth would be helpful.

yes, mix clear poly right into your paint in the paint cup, how much depends on how much you'd like to disperse the pigments(if it's too thick you can thin with a little water), these pigments are already suspended in a medium, you are just adjusting the medium amount varying the tint...if you are using Createx/ Badger airbrush paints the transparents combined with poly will give you the effect of depth on the plug, the metallic colors will really shimmer....spray some details with opaques and they will appear to sit up on top of the previous coats because light can pass around them but not through, this will give you a 3D effect...you can have a lot of fun with shading and details this way and layering colors to get different effects.....the final coat of epoxy makes everything jump out...I'm in Newport but I go to Manchester BS frequently, my wife's family is there, was supposed to go this weekend but have to work so I'll be sure to try to get together w/you next time through, maybe score a squeedle

Thanks guys for liking the plug so much. Scott for the tips. I've still got a looooong ways to go with the airbrush and I'm afraid I'm getting sucked in pretty good. It's funny NIB, In my tying and with plugs, I know that just the basic colors work great. Then I get an idea in my head, my hands start twitching and I can't stop myself.

I've decided to just let it go and see where it all ends up.
