1688 - First permanent settlers stripped the land of all it's lumber. I assume it was sold. for profit...
or
Mid 1800's to 1900's - Cuttyhunk Pilots - Men offered their services to pilot ships to New Bedford through the dangerous waters of the area. Also, the Massachusetts Humane Society created life saving stations throughout the Elizabeth Islands, supplying the islanders with items needed to assist boats in trouble.

close. When Gosnold found sasafrass on cuttyhunk, he filled his holds with it to bring back to England. Back then, it was thought that sasafras was the cure for syphalus.

Another piece of trivia- Ponce de Leon's search for the fountain of youth was do to find a spring that would make you immortal, but instead he was really on a quest to cure his impotence... go figure..
