Abu 7000 for cod?

So i chopped down a conventional rod for cod jiggin and it worked great. Has anyone ever tried using a abu 7k for cod fishing, 8-16 oz jigs, 12-20 oz sinkers? I am using a senator 4/0, and a 3/0 for bait fishing, the 3/0's ratio is 2-1 i think and it was getting old really quick. The 4/0 will probably be used for jiggin but im thinkin the abu might be good for bait. Its got carbonex drag washers, not sure if it has enough drag for the task, and if it will just disintegrate the gears.

Everything is better on the rocks.

Don't see why not - many huge bass over 50 lbs have been hauled in from the ditch using the Abu 7000!

jigging for cod will destroy it. bait fishing it in shallower water it will okay but not ideal. a penn 320 gt2 would be a better choice in that price range

I destroyed one this spring jigging cod in one day, the spool shaft didn't hold up, I'll second what Niko said or pick up a used Torium, Saltist etc. I have been using a Fin nor ofc 16h and love the cranking speed 6.2-1, and the narrow spool you almost dont have to worry about levelwinding

I figured it wouldnt hold up. I was looking at the saltists on the boat and the guys using them were pretty happy. i like the penn baja also. For the 2-3 trips a year i take i can wait out a good deal on a used one.

I use the Penn Senator 113H and the Shiman Torium 30 - both loaded with 65 lb PP (50 lb Yozuri Hybrid leader.10 yds long).

Between the two, I rather use the Senator just because it is less $ and winches up the fish with less effort IMHO. Torium is faster retrieve, but if you are just jiggin or bait fishing it is wasted $ IMHO. Penn's easier to get parts for as well - most corrosion resistant, too.

Rob, you are welcome to try either one out if you like. I'm close to MA Pike & Rt 495.

My favorite cod sticks are fiberglass and I like then to be able to work jigs 28 oz and more! One is cut down Uglystick blank other is old yellow Fenwick.

YMMV
