Commercial season ending
Was at 83.4% of quota this morning. I've heard it is over after Thursday. Anyone heard the same? Strange, I only saw one comm. out this morning.... Wonder what the price is.

Just talked to a distributor he had no idea.
He said this year sucked " fish are too big" and price has been too high.

Thanks, Dan. Time for strictly fun fishing now, not that I sell many anyways so it doesn't matter to me. We still have a cup to win back though.

Nothin like adequate warning.....I can already see it now, guys that don't go near a shop today or tomorrow pulling up to dealers thursday with boat loads of fish and finding out the hard way that the season is closed and they are in violation of the possession laws.........squirrel cops will probably be out in force writin tickets to the poor S.O.B.s......I have called everyone I know and they are all like ""what the F**K......I checked the quota this morning and it was only at 83%""" some one better catch some backfire for this late notice...........

The announcement went out today at 1:20pm to close tomorrow,very strange for them to shut it down so quickly with them being considerably under quota. Generally they try to give people around a week so the word gets out and fish are not brought in after the quota is met. I'm curious what the explanation will be for the sudden closure.

Redlite ;;
that,s common practice in Rhody .with all species . If you don,t sell everyday or call your dealer you could be f #$^&*l
they usually notify the dealers by fax around 4pm the day before the are going to close a species @ midnight the next day ..sometime 2 days
I ate a tote of tautog last year
& twice over the years I,ve come in & out with bass ;;
This year when fluke closed I sold the day before & my dealer didn,t know it was closing . I picked up on it on the net ,

Word will get around quickly, I'm sure. I may be completly mistaken, but I thought it used to be announced on NOAA radio too? I can remember hearing it while on my vessel, or perhaps it was just voices in my head...

AND the dealers that take in fish as well.some dealers forget to pass in the poundage that they've taken in untill way after the season has ended....this acount's for alot of the overage you see.The state can only count the poundage thats there sitting in front of them...opps! here some late reports.O well, we'll just subtract this from next years season.

Don't we usually hear they will take the weight off the next year but really never do? Having trouble remembering.

its been a long time since RI has gone over on Bass ..the last 4 seasons . they kept the fall season open cuz they couldn,t fill it . I believe @ least two of the seasons they let another fishery in to fill it ><><><><

I think RI stays the line a bit better due to the fact there isn't a huge influx of fish all at once. The 5 fish daily limit almost certainly assures this won't happen. There's also less ground covered too in terms of where the fish are harvested and most of the participants are RI residents.
With Mass there's a sizable portion of the quota that's taken well outside Mass waters. Its a literal free for all.
One fish house I visited this summer had 30 very large fish which averaged around 30# plus each. They were all harvested by the same guy. This wasn't the work of an extraordinarily skilled pinhooker, but the work of a skilled spearfisher who culled the fish for size by visually picking out the select fish from the school, shooting them, then brought them into Mass from CT to sell. Every fish had a quarter sized bullet hole just behind the gill plate from the dart. To be honest with everyone, I really don't have a huge issue with this stuff provided the fish go against the 1.1 million pound quota. I mean, the regulators allow for the removal of 1.1 million pounds of fish from the biomass, so does it really matter how they get harvested? Yes its illegal, but the regulation of this fishery has to change at the top, not with the end user...otherwise the abuse will always happen... and it takes on countless forms.

Isn't your fishery also grandfathered? That goes a long way towards limiting participation.
