Boston Harbor Boating Help!

Hi Everyone,

Im a North Shore guy looking to explore Boston Harbor a little bit for the first time. I have a smaller side boat - 17.5' that I would love to get out on in the Harbor and give it a go for some Flounder or Stiper.

Need some help - I really have no idea where to launch and then head for once underway...

Anyone have any knowledge for a Boston Harbor first-timer?

I come from the south shore and when fishing boston harbor and surrounding areas launch at weymouth back river. You are coming from the opposite direction so not sure.

Definitely lots of good areas around the islands for structure, etc but of course this means you have to be extra vigilant while out there since it's unfamiliar territory.

the harbor is a great place. plenty of fish and places to explore. check your pm

There is a free launch in Charlestown right under the Tobin Bridge near Mystic River. The Super Duck boats use it. Only open from 7AM to 7PM. Easily seen from Google Earth.

Follow signs to the Constitution and keep going to road bears left.

Launch in winthrop you can flounder fish in front of the poop tanks and tube n worm till the cows come home on the airport flats

Thanks a ton everyone. So, if i launch under the Tobin can i leave my truck there? Also, once on the water at the launch, point me towards the Flounder! or at least which way to head to wet a line? Don't gv me directions to your secret spot....just give me directions to a good spot!

Charlestown is just a ramp
No dock just granite slabs with no cleats. Tough do do alone.
Behind wellington circle there is a public launch
though the ramp is old and you have to go thru the lock to get into the harbor.
I never used winthrop but it does look convenient.

You can't get up the river until may 1st there's a barge working on the drawbridge the locks are no big deal but your a good 1/2 hour- 45 minites of headway speed no wake to get past the airport where you'll want to be anyways

ok. thanks alot guys. so if i want to be past the airport anyways, im thinking my best bet all around seems to be launching from Winthrop. Im looking to get out within the next week or so. Ill def report back! Thanks for everyones input! This site seems to be the "reel" deal! (ouch, cudnt resist)

I'm a former Newburyport/Ipswich Bay boater who now keeps my boat in East Boston on the Winthrop side. I recommend using the Winthrop ramp as well. Be mindful of the tides and you will find plenty of opportunities within the harbor.

You can also launch at the Schrafts Center. There's a dock to tie up to nearby. I'm not sure about parking the truck. I think it's fine.

Boston Harbor is pretty easy boating overall. Be careful around "Lower Middle" between the airport and Spectacle Island. Look for the 1, 3, and 5 green cans. Stay away at low tide.
Also, be careful by Castle Island. There's a line of rocks that extend out towards the #5 day marker. Once again only a real concern at low water.
There is good flounder fishing on Governors Flats (by the airport) and around Hospital Shoals.
You'll also find bass (and later bluefish) on the surface by the airport and in front of Castle Island. This is usually early in the morning and at dusk.
