certified scale

Which bait shops in RI have a state certified scale capable of weighing a big fish - something in excess of 50 pounds?

Joe - Quaker Lane had to use a Deer Scale once when I saw a 50 brought in - then to be certain, we put the fish on a postal scale to get the weight

Maridee in Gansett does.

I think Weekapaug's scale is state certified and it goes beyond 50 pounds. Sadly, I have not had this dilema where I've needed to weigh in a Fifty of my own .

Joe - You are truly pointing at the fence for the upcoming season. Way to be optimistic.

I was just curious. I had a decent fish last year that I tried to get weighed, but I could not find anyone with a scale. That should speak to dearth of larger fish - when there are bait shops without scales.
I ended up at a place that had a flat scale and the head and tail hung off the sides and touched the counter - you can't get an accurate read that way. I just said the heck with it after that.

You need to take a piece of wood the length of the fish, place the wood on the scale and note the weight.
Then place the fish on the plank so it does not hang over and weigh them together.
Deduct the weight of the plank and you have the weight of your fish.

If it is your fish, pick it up by the gill plates and keep the head high.

If it is some one elses fish, pick it up by the tail and shake it a couple of times to rattle the stones out of its belly.

Couldn't find it, but I think the RI DEM has a listing of shops that have scales and their capacities for their Citation program.
