17' Center Console Build

I am just getting started on my 17' CC boat. Hull will be finished by mid-summer but my budget probably won't allow me to get the 40-50 hp motor and suitable trailer right away. Looks like I'll be shore and kayak fishing untill then.

Yes, it's from bateau. It is going together very easily! I've been building things for over 35 years. Recently three different kayaks and a flat-bottomed john boat. Good practice for a real fishing boat like this will be.

Thanks: Its only heated with a space heater which is OK, but not great for epoxy work. Beam is 7' at midship and 6.5' @ widest point of transom.

be careful if that is kerosene, I read that the residue effects the epoxy

I assume this is cold molded and will be glass over wood.
There was a project on the hulltruth a while back.
21 fter with a 4 cly diesel.
Boat was georgeous when done.
Lots of back breaking fairing involved though !

When it comes time for coating and glassing with the epoxy in cold weather you can make a lite frame to go over the boat and get a cheap blue tarp. Put an electric heater underneath when the job is done. This will heat things up enough to cure the epoxy better. And of course you can use the faster cure to help. One layer of 10oz cloth should do ya.

Plans call for 12 oz. cloth inside and out and 12 oz. biaxial tape on chines and keel. I can manage the job of doing the work with a space heater in my shop. Just not on these January days with high temps in the low 20's.

I plan on eliminating the cuddy and making it open with a center console.

Very cool.... Might want to consider putting some locking/lifting wheels on the strongback now, while you have good access. You most likely will want or need to move it around in the future. And it is only going to get heavier.

Good luck with the build! It's a ton of fun. I've been slowly building an FS17. I've really enjoyed the build and have learned a ton. Just be sure not to get overwhelmed. One step at a time!

Nightfighter brings up a good point too. Prior to the flip mine was stationary and it wasn't awful. However, I did put the cradle on casters as it was nice to be able to move around. Just something to consider.

Pretty sure I'll finish up this year. I'm impressed your out there now! I pretty much hang it up between Jan and March! hahahahha...it's just so cold! Than April shows up and the fishing starts...no wonder it is taking me years!!!!

Wow! Lower ...your boat is looking great! You're working on your console so it looks like you'll be done soon. Got a motor for it yet? I have some wheels for the strongback ready to go. Lots of fairing and sanding I'll do outside on nice days.

This project is for me and my 26 year old son to build together. My plans are to finish building it within the year but probably not in time for this season. The motor and trailer will cost more than the hull.(I'm looking for a deal on a slightly used 40-50 HP motor)

Bloo.. I'll still be fishing the surf alot even after the boat is done. Just might not be kayaking as much! See you out there

Thanks! It's getting there. I still have to finish the gunwales and then begin fairing the inside. The finish work (fairing, etc) can really eat up some time! You'll see what I mean soon enough! No motor yet, I'm looking. I'll be doing similair to you, a 40 or 50. Keep up the good work and throw some pics up every once in awhile, their great to see.

You are correct...and observant! But it was too cold to do any epoxy/fiberglass this weekend. Just setting things up and dry fitting pieces. Waiting for warmer temps to join my side panels to length.

Making some progress. My son is laid off from work, so he has had some time to keep things going. He is a little nervous about doing things without me there but he is gaining some confidence.
